The weekly release notes strong public demand to stay out of war. Curtis says Congress will bend every effort to keep the nation out of conflict and criticizes loose talk about war while noting Europe must settle its own problems. Joe Lewis is praised for keeping his conduct steady.
The graveling job from Diller to Jack Hill's school house completed Monday. Shearer & Son of Hebron held the contract for this state project. Gravel was pumped from the Blue river south of Endicott. The county also finished a mile of road from Carr's corner east to the county line. Material hauled from Adam Gretzinger's farm north of Steele City.
Free talking pictures begin at Diller on Saturday night and continue each Saturday. The shows are at the city park on North Main Street. Attendees are asked to bring their own seating as no planks are available for seating for some time.
A 74 pound daughter, Donna May, was born May 7 1939 to Mr and Mrs Wm Kunecke of Jefferson Iowa. Grandparents Lawrence Madden and Thella Madden, great grandmother Ida Woods, celebrate the arrival. Mother and baby are reported to be doing nicely at Saint Anthony Hospital in Carroll.
Mrs Pink Clark Joedell and Mrs Nellie Sparks Miller arrived here last Thursday traveling from Southern California. Mrs Miller will stay with her mother and Mrs Joedell will visit her brother Fred Clark and other relatives for several months.
Fritz Lottman and two children traveled with Miss Alice Specht and Mr. and Mrs. George Specht to Lincoln last Sunday. From there the Spechts took a train to Omaha where George will undergo hospital observation and x rays.
The 18th annual 8th grade promotion exercises in Jefferson County will be held Thursday June 1 at the Fairbury High School auditorium. The program starts promptly at 1 30 p.m.
Bud and Gretchen Fanders left early Tuesday morning in Buds Model A for Coorad Iowa to visit Harold Henrichs and the Fridays.
Court announce C. E. Waggoner as ambassador to the Ak-Sar-Ben court for Diller during the present year. Dates for 1939 Ak-Sar-Ben ages listed: big race meet May 27 to July 4, den shows begin June 12 for six Mondays, and livestock show runs October 22 to 28.
County and precinct committee men set 1940 wheat allotments and plan to notify every wheat producer by June 15 to aid conservation program preparations. Those with no wheat in 1937 38 or 39 and who will plant in 1940 should request an allotment. National wheat allotment for 1940 is 62 million acres versus 55 million in 1939.
Miss Ema Sible's class toured the Care-More Ice Cream Co factory in Beatrice. Owner Mr. Morgan promised ice cream for the best essays on The Value of Ice Cream as a Food. Gloria Joyce Miler won a gallon, Shirley Rae Garrels won a half gallon.
County Superintendent McCreight reports 26 rural schools closed on Friday May 12. Remaining rural schools will close on Friday May 19. Teachers and students prepare for the summer dispersal with many last day picnics planned.
Real estate report for the week notes the county sheriff deeded to Chas Osborn of Lincoln the west 25 feet of lot 8 and east 25 feet of lot 9, block 6, 1st addition to Diller, between Rex Green’s residence and Minnie Clausson’s, for $15. Part of the recent tax sale.
Miss Camilla Hubka, daughter of Mr and Mrs Rudolph Hubka, is a fifth grade student in district 142 Gage county. She earned two first and one third awards at the scholastic educational day competition in Diller last week. Teacher Miss Long guided her work.
Commissioner S C Hutchison informs farmers that grasshopper poison bait is plentiful at the county seat. See your county precinct committeeman for information on how to obtain it.
Mrs. Clarence Hiatt received a message this morning informing her that she had won a General Electric Radio in a Kleenex contest.
Mrs W E Anderson, who has been receiving treatment at Odell hospital, is expected to return home today.
Diller high school athletes tied for third at the state track meet in Lincoln. Key performances include Robert Fry winning a 440 heat, Harold Lottman winning another 440 heat, and Roger Diller finishing second in his 220 heat. Diller’s relay placed second to Ohiowa with close time comparison, while Ohiowa, Class D winner, showed strength across events. Over 100 Class D schools entered and weather cooperated for many record chances.
Mrs Otto Kruger 77 died last Friday night at her Gridley California home. Funeral services were held Monday at the home of her daughter Mrs C S Everett in Rifle Colorado. She was step mother of George Meyers and sister of Angora Nebraska and J Meyer and aunt of Mrs J F Meyer. Survived by four daughters Mrs Grace Johnson Mrs Dale Elders Mrs Gertrude Bailey and Ruth and a son John Kuhl plus grandchildren.
Diller overcame a late deficit scoring three runs in the 10th inning at Odell last Sunday. Roy Casper pitched the complete game with twelve strikeouts and no walks. Endicott visits Diller Ball Park on Sunday May 21 for a key league clash.
Friday afternoon in district 23 students and teacher Miss Mary Wenz visited government ponds near Steele City the orphans home at Diller and canyons at Steele City. A wiener roast was enjoyed and appreciated.
Mr and Mrs Milton Fry and Oliver Fry with son Clark traveled from North Platte on Wednesday to attend the referee's sale of estate property at Fairbury and spent a day or two visiting the Quinter Fry home.
Congressman Curt notes tolerance amid protests as a 79 foot statue of a worker with a red star and hammer and sickle stands atop the Russian pavilion. A room inside features the USSR Constitution volumes for visitors and active selling of the Soviet system by Russians raises questions on lasting endurance in totalitarian nations.
Mothers of Dist 89 pupils surprised teacher Miss Anna Wenz with a luncheon and farewell gifts last Friday. Mrs. Weigel spoke for the group. The day included a fond appraisal and best wishes for her future. The class later held a wiener and marshmallow roast and a hike to Diller visiting the orphanage. Mary and Eleanor later returned to drive them home.
Mrs Scott Miller president of the 4th Dist NFWC spoke at the Crete Woman's Club May luncheon on May 12. Officers were installed with Mrs S B Stoffer, wife of Doane College president, installed as club president. Miller received a bouquet as Scott Jr. joined his parents for Mothers Day weekend.
Mr and Mrs Harry Weddle and daughter Dixie of Sterling Colorado arrive to spend Mother's Day with Mr and Mrs Wm Glathar. Their other daughter Mrs Dale Whirter of Colorado Springs visits grandparents Mr and Mrs Chas Barber. Della Weddle is a professional nurse in Colorado Springs hospital.
Miss Ruth Pyche of Lincoln and Mrs. A B Lessy with daughter Mary Jane from West Point visited the home of Rev. H H Pyche and his wife for Mothers Day activities.
An American Legion convention occurred in Marysville last week featuring a large evening parade. Diller representatives included Bandmaster Ingalsbe Freddie Drexler cornetist and Mr and Mrs S A Miller. About a dozen bands drum and bugle corps infantry from Fort Riley and VFW and auxil iaries joined the procession. The Fairbury VFW drum and bugle corps the Nebraska unit invited and a top baton twirler from Topeka attended. A 730 demonstration showcased bands and corps with an electric light baton twirler.
Mr and Mrs Clifford Sparkes of Liberty with Mrs and Mrs Wm Steer of Jansen depart Saturday for an extended journey to Alberta and the western coast. They aim to visit Mrs Sparks brother in Edmonton and may pass Grand Prairie en route while Clifford hopes to glimpse the Cavett boys and perhaps the King of England.
R. E. Riley age 63 died at his Fairbury home after a long illness. He was a longtime figure in Fairbury affairs serving as secretary of the Fairbury Chamber of Commerce for 26 years before 1936. His wife and daughter survive. Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon.
The Fry real estate was sold yesterday at the courthouse by Referee J. A. Brunt. The residence in town went to Harry Sailing for 325 dollars. The 53 acre farm one half mile north of town was bid in by the heirs at 2000 dollars, highest outside bids.
