Bonfires, gardens and spring activity fill the week with Maple trees budding and oats plowing underway. Notables include Herb Barber moving to the Steiner farm and H K Shutt buying a new Buick. Local travels report visitors, funerals, and a bee sting tragedy linked to J P London's sudden death.
Seede Wiemers offers a stack of oats straw and a stack of alfalfa for sale. Mrs. Maude Hall visited from Lincoln to see her father Alex Bell who is in failing health. A seven pound daughter was born March 20 to Mr and Mrs John Bures residing seven miles northeast of Diller.
Pasture lands, good locations, grass, water and shade. 11 R F Starr, Alfred Oaks and family moved back from Minnesota arriving Tuesday. Mr Qairg will cultivate his father's farm one mile north of Shea this year. For rent the house and buildings on the Plihal Forty with garden and pasture for one cow. Beatrice visitors Mrs Bauquess, Mrs Elmo Hadely and Mrs Ruth Bowers visited Monday. Mr Geo T Eick and family were surprised by a visit from his sister Mrs Andrew Acker and her daughter Mrs Birtie Evert from Greely Nebr.
Wm Glathar narrowly avoided losing his right hand when a circular saw cut a three inch gash across the back of his hand while clearing saw dust. He was treated by a local physician and cautioned the injury may hinder his spring work.
Governor Kieth Neville and War Savings Director Ward M. Burgess call War Savings Day for Friday March 22 1918 in Diller to urge citizens to subscribe for War Savings Stamps after two o clock and promote sales. Local items note spring work and farming changes including Allen Nelson visiting Beatrice Joe Hiatt buying a Buick Fred Sasse farming Oberst place and Avery Lumber Co building cement blocks. The Jefferson County German American Alliance shifted about 45 dollars from treasury to the Red Cross.
Lloyd Myers, formerly principal of the Jansen School and currently a rural mail carrier on a Diller route, has again applied for the Jansen School principal position.
Mrs J P Lowe died Monday at her Cadums home Nebraska. Funeral services were held Tuesday and she was buried in Superior cemetery. She is survived by her husband and six children Thomas Blanche Shields Harry Frank Grace Clark and Ralph all except Grace Clark of Tucson Arizona were present at the funeral.
An Ogilvie reader reports Frank left for Camp Dodge received a Red Cross comfort kit from Diller ladies, uses it daily, and asked for thanks be conveyed. He serves in Co E 21st Engineers and welcomes Diller friends contact. Also notes Fairbury item on Jefferson county defense meeting, William Hahn and Ernest Hoake gifting Red Cross, bonds, and noting Hoake as alien.
Forest Hartzel returned Wednesday from Omaha with three car loads of cattle for its feed yards. George Turner, 67, an elderly Steele City resident recently moved into town, hanged himself in his barn last Sunday. No reason given, though he reportedly feared a cancer diagnosis.
Lenten services draw a good crowd with growing interest. Next week services are at the Presbyterian church. Regular Sunday services Sunday March 24 greet Palm Sunday with a sermon by Mr. Larkin. The union service will be held in this church Sunday evening with Mr. Larkin preaching.
Reading from the notice, church events plan union services at Rock Creek and in the M. E. church. Evening gatherings run daily except Saturday with growing attendance and interest. A larger turnout is urged as services shift to the Presbyterian church next week.
