Prosecution and defense reopen the case against Fairbury woman Effie Austin in district court. She faces a charge of grand larceny for allegedly stealing merchandise valued over $30 from the Kramer Grossman store while employed as a clerk. The earlier $17,000 in jewelry found at her home is not at issue in the new proceeding.
The defense may accept the greater value as testified earlier or wait for contrary evidence. A stipulation will allow alienists from the first trial to testify again or be read from records. The state may value hundreds of small items to speed the case, focusing on three pieces of merchandise for grand larceny. The special term jury convenes at 9 am Monday. juror pool may be supplemented by salesmen due to wide public interest. The second trial proceeds with less expert testimony, the state resting after Wednesday afternoon.
