The post office adopts adding a postal unit number to addresses in large cities to speed delivery. Postmasters, press, and public respond positively as most residents are notified of their unit numbers and mail moves faster through branch offices.
Lincoln State Journal reports Rev. C. F. Innis learns of son David Innis and family in Manila from a letter said to be by Charmian Boomer. The letter, relayed from Tokyo by radio, describes Santo Tomas internment, garden, music teaching, cooking on a coal stove, and hopes for reunion.
Jefferson county men were announced Wednesday by the selective service board at Fairbury for the June induction, listing Ray Eldon Benz Serenus Samuel Viers Merlin Maynard Reinwald Milbert Henry Christ Robert Lee Korte William Ludlow Geer Ruben George Willcoxon Glen Edward Riddle Harland Robert Carmichael and many others bound for the induction process.
An official War Department notice received June 4 by Mrs. Sadie Roseman informs her son Pfc Marvin Roseman has been wounded in the Tunisian campaign against German forces. This marks the first official indication that Diller boys are in the European war theater.
During last Friday night’s heavy electrical storm three of Leonard Richardson’s horses were struck and killed by lightning, while a fourth was slightly injured. The loss was partially covered by insurance.
Eleanor Weigel who taught in rural schools near Diller for two years is elected to teach the advanced grades in Jansen city schools next year.
The B B Kensington invites all members and former members to a June 20 picnic at Fairbury city park. A basket luncheon will be served at noon. Mildred Pingel is secretary.
A county wide conference of women discussed a surplus vegetable distribution plan to help farmers and consumers. A town country food team has been formed with local representatives to coordinate sharing extra garden produce for home canning. Lewis John Williams of Steele City will present a piano and voice recital at the Presbyterian church Sunday evening June 20 at 8 30 P M. The sophomore at Wayne State Teacher's College Wayne Nebraska has studied with Albert G Carlson Russel Anderson and formerly with Dr Ralph Robbins. Piano selections include McDowell and Rachmaninoff and vocal numbers feature works by de Koven Handel and Mendelssohn. Vocal accompaniment is by Mrs Chester Wilcox of Steele City.
Mrs. John Carico will sell at auction June 19 her Diller property and household goods. Bills will be distributed early next week. Mr and Mrs R J Williamson from Sioux Falls S Dak came to remain until June 20. After the sale Mrs Carico will move to Falls City to live with relatives.

A wartime letter from Lawrence Weigel to Dear Folks describes organizing and piling over two million sandbags to reinforce a levee near Caterpillar and east Peoria Illinois. He praises Caterpillar crews for their 15000 workers, Army engineers, fuel for machines, and rapid road and swamp clearing.
The Wennersten family of Shickley announces the engagement of Bonnie Wennersten to Midshipman Lloyd London of Fairbury. Both graduates of the University of Nebraska with London set to complete midshipman school at Northwestern on July 1. wedding planned for July 4.
C A Tiny Robson suffered a deep cut to the right leg when a railroad tie slipped and fell on him while he helped carry it last Friday. He was taken to Odell hospital for treatment.
The Harbine depot has been torn down with service discontinued. A small shed remains standing as a freight storage warehouse.
Doane College at Crete held commencement in Lee Memorial Chapel on May 31 1943. Scott Miller Jr earned his AB degree after completing work by mid year and served as a Doane instructor the past three years. Special degrees were conferred including Doctor of Laws to Senator George Norris and honors to the Four Horsemen of Doane.
Aviation Cadet Calvin Novotny completed bombardier preflight training at Ellington Field Texas and has been sent to the advanced bombardier school at Childress Texas.
Cpl and Mrs George Armstrong of Galveston Texas on a fifteen day furlough spent Saturday evening with relatives at Odell visiting the Rex Green home.
Acard from Roe Patton states he passed the Navy with a bapg and was to leave immediately for Farragut Idaho. Cpl and Mrs Bernard Behrends are visiting at the home of his parents Mr and Mrs Will Behrends. Hubert Filley and family are visiting at the home of his parents Mr and Mrs W I Filley.
