Jefferson county students attend Nebraska summer session

Thirty three Jefferson county youths join the University of Nebraska Lincoln for the current summer session. The group includes 19 residents of Fairfield Fairbury 3 from Jansen 2 from Daykin 2 from Harbine 2 from Endicott 2 from Plymouth 2 from Diller and 1 from Powell. From Diller are Minnie Wehling a teachers college junior and Pearl Sparks a freshman in the teachers college.

Navy son writes of Alaska voyage plan from Pier 39

Mrs Ruth Pickard of Fairbury formerly Diller receives a July 4 letter from her son William Bowers in the U S Navy. He says they are at Pier 39 San Francisco and will sail June 6 toward Seattle then toward Alaska by inland route and return by open sea stopping at Skagway Seward and Port Angles with a visit to Muis Glacier Bay. She expects his return in late summer.

Death of Ed Hamblin Jr. in Woodward Okla.

The note details Ed Hamblin of Woodward Oklahoma died July 8 aged 78 years 5 months 20 days and the transport of his body to Prairie Home cemetery for burial beside his wife. Ed Hamblin Jr and family attended the service, with Rev J Fillinger presiding at the grave in Steele City.

Tax on Wheat and Road Request at Lincoln

The processing tax on wheat 30 cents per bushel went into effect at midnight Saturday raising flour and bread costs. Farmers may exchange wheat for flour without tax, while merchants have 30 days to clear existing stocks. A Diller Sea club delegation including Hutchinson and Dr By Vries with Rep Frank Wells urged Lincoln officials to add the nine mile Diller link between Highways 3 and 385 to the state system. they were heard but not acted, with notes for future highway commission guidance.

Artesian Well Discovered On Claussen Farm

At J B Claussen’s farm one mile south of the Kilpatrick ranch John Gerth drilled 175 feet to strike an artesian well. Water rises three feet above ground at about a quarter gallon per minute. The nearby 35 foot well went dry in the drought and the new well lies near the old one, likely tapping the same water vein as Kilpatrick’s.
