Diller gears up for its 45th annual Picnic with emphasis on home talent. Residents are urged to contribute costumes, old vehicles, horses, and wagons for a parade and to share ideas. Mrs. Rudolph Hubka and Mrs. Ira Casper lead Sunbonnet Suit organization as Chas. Waggoner grows followers. Committee members seek participation.
Mr and Mrs Ray Colman and grandson Roger Babcock arrived in Beatrice on the Burlington the evening of the 4th. They met Ray Green who brought them to Diller. They left Sunday for Hastings over the Burlington via Humboldt. Ray, recovering from a serious eye infection, was selling tickets for the line at Hastings.
Robert Patton arrived home from Norfolk Virginia last Friday morning at his parents Roy and (Mrs) Patton home. He will report for duty July 17 at 8 PM and expects to leave Diller next Monday July 14. He is described as a real Navy man who likes his work.
Miss Alice Specht fell ill while visiting Fairbury and was transported home to Diller by ambulance. She is very poorly and will be sent to University Hospital in Omaha on Saturday for treatment. Mrs. Griswold has been with her at the home.
Dr. S B Viers has inoculated horses against sleeping sickness as cases remain mild locally. Reports say the disease is more severe in areas to the north and south of the region.
A Diller Nebraska man C L Geer was praised after finding a billfold with 200 dollars on Main Street and returning it to Frank Hisey of Orion township. The finder’s actions were cited in the Chatfield News as an example of integrity.
National Education Association in Boston approves purge of educators deemed inimical to the country. A 60 member commission will investigate subversive teaching and $20,000 is funded to support the effort.
William Ulmer age 69 died last week at his Caruthers California home after months of illness. Funeral services were held at Fairbury Baptist church last Sunday. He left his farm after his wife died in 1917 and moved to California. He leaves a brother E. J. Ulmer of California and two sisters Mrs O A Sollenberger of Jansen and Mrs Waitz of Pennsylvania.
A baton twirling exhibition by Miss Marilyn Miller opened the Bonham Theatre program on a Wednesday evening. A baton twirling contest for Fairbury contestants is held at the theatre with a specialty number each evening of the contest.
A Tuesday evening lightning bolt hit the chimney of Aunt Christie Seaman's house causing a cracked chimney and damaged plaster and a knocked out radio. Mrs Seaman was away visiting Norman Friabies at the time.
Fred Wearing and his Penn Sylvanians perform Pleasure Time with no band concert Saturday night. The Diller band will play at the Steele City picnic Friday and Saturday.
The Lincoln Journal reports a Friday dinner at the Cornhusker Hotel honoring Mrs. Ethel May Sanmann WPA state director of community service program division who is leaving in July for a new Washington D C. posting. Guests included out of town relatives from Diller and Des Moines with WPA officials and performances by Nancy Warner and Sam Brown.
Steele City tried a new ad approach for its upcoming picnic on Friday and Saturday July 11 and 12. Fred Carr distributed bills in surrounding towns and even placed one at the Record office doorway. Carr, a student and pilot, travels between Fairbury and other towns to log flight hours while promoting the event.
The Dorcas Society Kensington will meet July 24 instead of July 17 due to committee members traveling out of town. An ice cream social is planned for Saturday July 19.

Frank Fasnacht born December 7 1883 in Gage County near Diller Nebraska spent his life in Ellis Nebraska. He married Elizabeth Grabber on August 11 1915 and had four children. He died July 2 at 57 of lung cancer after a long illness. Funeral services were held July 4 at Ellis Methodist Church with interment at Prairie Home Cemetery. He was survived by his wife Elizabeth and children and other relatives.
The Fesvacht family expresses gratitude to neighbors and friends for kindness and words of sympathy. They thank the Congregational Church for songs, the ministers for their services during illness and death of their father and brother.

Members include George Apking Daykin J Smith Diller Charlies B Calloway Merle J Roney Harold Livingston Howard C Hardy Frank Flynn Roy M McCord all of Fairbury with participation on farm debt adjustment and rural rehabilitation committees. The council will meet regularly and members receive reimbursements and work with local planning groups and FSA personnel to implement rehabilitation programs for low income farm families.
