Long’s Store on Main Street closed last Thursday night after the owner Glenn Long hung a closed sign and moved to assist Farmers Store. Stock remaining unsold at the time of reporting.
Mr and Mrs R F Starr of Cedar Falls purchased the Peters residence in Diller last week. Now occupied by Rev H H Pyche, the property will be used by their daughter and her family, Mr and Mrs Floyd Hughes and son Richard.
Mrs Filley remains at Dr Rice's hospital in Odell after a fall fractured her lower leg. She will stay for at least three more weeks and is weary of the 40 pound ankle weights used in rehabilitation.
The January teachers exams will be held on Saturday January 25 at Fairbury High School library and Diller High School assembly. Exams start at 8:00 A M and continue at 1:00 P M with the regular schedule followed throughout the day.
J A Cully of Beatrice came to town Friday for the first time in two months because of bad roads. He paid a year in advance of his subscription to the Record at the office during the visit.
Mr and Mrs A D Stotts rode to DIlner in a brand new Ford V-8 last Sunday. They had dinner with Mr and Mrs W A Snyder and visited a cousin who is ill in Odell.
Lawrence Caldwell and Bert Wills of Holmeville traveled to Garden City last Friday to be with Caldwell's father, who suffered flu and a broken hip from a fall and was in serious condition. They came back to Diller Sunday, and Wills later returned to Helmsville. By Monday the patient was resting easier.
Mrs. Ben Roelfs and her two sons Walter and William returned home last Saturday after traveling to Chaplin Illinois for the funeral of Mrs. Ben Roelfs sister Mrs. William Berghouse last Wednesday. They also visited daughter Adelia Roelfs Bigler in Peoria to check on Mr. Bigler who was injured at Keystone Steel Factory last Wednesday and is reported in satisfactory condition. On the way home they stopped at Bluffs Illinois to see Mrs. Anna Northrup, Erie and Ben Roelfs sister, who is recovering from a broken hip suffered while tending chickens.
Mrs. Vernon Hill displayed antique glass and icing at a Monday Beatrice event sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. Exhibits included early American newspaper, typewriters, Victorian furniture, and Staffordshire pieces. Drew of Omaha lectured on the three Victorian periods with examples in glass and china.
Mr and Mrs Chester Sparke and Mr and Mrs Alpha Wiemers with Delpha returned Saturday noon from California. They enjoyed a wonderful time visiting relatives in Bever ly Hills San Jose Los Angeles and San Francisco. They attended the Rose Bowl game and Parade of Roses at Pasadena with nine Sparks cousins and Lillian Gostelow
Henry Schwisow, back from Storm Lake to Daykin, misplaced a billfold with $25 in Fairbury. A day before Christmas he was notified by Henry W. Meyer of Diller that the billfold and money were found, and Schwisow recovered them Christmas morning.
Convalescing Mr and Mrs Lyon Waggoner arrived in Diller from Worthington Minnesota to spend weeks with the latter's parents Mr and Mrs Chas Waggoner Lynn is convalescing from his recent appendectomy operation Friends in Diller report he is on the road to recovery.
Pancakes made with Cooper's pancake flour will be served this Saturday at the Farmer's Store. A generous helping of Pennick Ford Syrup and Maxwell House coffee will be offered with the meal.
The Diller School introduces a broad inclusive physical education plan under Mr. Goerke and Mr. Armstrong. It aims to involve every student from grades 4 through 12 in various activities, emphasizing healthful recreation, beginner-friendly sport views, and personal skill development. Attendance issues from colds are noted, and a film on soil conservation was shown. Basketball crowds remain strong as the season proceeds.
The Diller Woman's Club held its January meeting at E. Floyd Hughes residence with thirteen members present. Vice president Glenn Long led in place of the absent president C. Hiatt. Topics covered Women In The Bible with discussions led by Mrs. Ralph Long and others. Music by Mrs. Hughes and refreshments served by the host and Mrs. Christie Seaman. Next gathering planned January 15 at Mrs. John Huttenmeyer. Nearby families visited E. E. McCune residence for a noon meal. Herbert Barber's guests included Willis Clark and Dorothy Roelfs.
Pettenger of Compton California wed Roe Allen Sparks of Diller Nebraska in a Long Beach ceremony officiated by Rev. Jane Lewis. The couple, with 100 guests, will reside in Bremerton Washington after January 15 while Sparks serves on the U S S Saratoga.
The N C S A Club met at Mrs. H H Green’s home on January 8 with eight members and one guest Dora Wohlfarth. New officers elected: President Mrs Roy Geer, Vice President Mrs S B Viers, Secretary Mrs H H Green, Treasurer Mrs S C Hutchinson. Roll call featured each member presenting an antique and its story. Hostess served refreshments. meeting to be hosted again by Mrs Hutchinson January 22.
Mrs Kenneth Young and her baby daughter returned Sunday morning from Odell hospital to the home of her father J Smith Diller.
