Pay up week cues spring time. J D Fanders offers a second hand Overland car. Comb honey 10 cents per pound from Wm Goeke of Diller. Geo Riddle will move back to his farm near the town site by March 1. Frank Bryant and Otis Allen of Steele City shopped in Diller. Gerd Henrichs visited relatives at Byron Oaks and Davenport. The Colman family’s son, once in Beatrice hospital, was brought home.
Mrs Orval Riddle and her infant departed on the early Tuesday train to join her husband and establish a home at Yuma Colorado.
The Diller Telephone Company applies to the State Railway Commission for new rates boosting business phone rentals by 50 cents monthly and other lines by 25 cents. A hearing is scheduled March 1 at 10 a.m. at the commission office in Lincoln for involved parties.
A Farm and Fireside piece estimates child rearing costs about 250 dollars annually, making a 21 year old worth around 5000 dollars. It notes 5000 dollars is a typical indemnity in accident insurance, implying the average able bodied American citizen is worth that amount.
The Wires Of Work lodge in Diller gains momentum with new candidates signing up after adoption of F C rates. A six county district meeting in Hastings Friday night saw 250 initiated with E E McCune B F Clark Harley Clark Cole Chas Fisher Frank H A Bell and Ira Place among attendees.
Lent began Wednesday. Fred Morrison plans to farm 80 acres at the former Weddle property. A firemen’s play is noted. Fred Shutt, jeweler, offers repair services for watches, clocks, and jewelry. A reception and dinner honored Mr and Mrs Harry Thompson at Mrs Christie Thompson’s home with many Diller relatives. Mrs Rheena Warthen visited Hubbell Nebraska and Indiana before returning home from Indiana.
Local items report the Diller lumber yard sale to R L Avery of Red Cloud and marriages near Diller including John H Bures to Emily Hubka by County Judge O Keefe at the Beatrice courthouse. Visitors C C Warthen and sister Mrs H C Stotta, and family observed Washington's birthday events. Abilene Kansas residents Jerry Marstellar and wife visited former neighbors George Riddle and others during a wedding trip.
Avone Powell notes new beginners in the first primary and two in the sixth grade, with Alice and Gertrude Specht among them. Arnold Fouts filled in for Miss Clark in the intermediate room, Allen Folkers absent two days, and Harold Bowers and Pearl Diller were out sick or visiting family. Sixth grade studies cotton growth and writes on the topic.
Announcement cards report the marriage of Verne Blythe to Lulu Eva Buchanan on the 14th in Admire Kansas with a home to be established after March 20th. F C Simmons of Seward will address the AOUW lodge in Diller this Saturday inviting members and suspensions to attend and hear rates discussed. Neighbors Ray and Mrs Hudson hosted a surprise party as they move from Blauser land to Henry Watson's farm southeast of town with about fifty seven attendees enjoying games music and refreshments.
J W Fouts remains active in closed land deals this week with Armsted selling 160 acres to E M Foreman for 16000 and A F Lutz selling 117 acres to Wm R Bebhrends for 11700. These figures add to prior sales reported since January 1 and show earnings around 10000 from January to February 21 based on 9.009 per day.
Diller high school hosted talks by Rev Carmony and Rev Sual Wan on Monday and Wednesday. Hanover boys and girls lost to Diller on their home floor, girls 13 8 and boys 24 12. The boys prep for the state tournament at Lincoln March 7 8 9 10 with entries sent and class not yet chosen. Mr and Mrs R L Oaks returned from a southern trip visiting Beatrice with King family in Beatrice.
Church notices report good attendance and interest at the Methodist meetings. Rev. Sullivan preaches Sunday morning and evening with Sunday school and Epworth League at the usual hour. Evening services at 7 45. Prayer meeting Wednesday at 7 30. Supt Gilbert to preach and hold quarterly conference at Rock Creek church next Monday at 8 o'clock.
