Harve Pittenger Funeral Held At Beatrice

Harve Pittenger died at home in Beatrice February 9 at age about 87. Funeral services were held Tuesday at Naz arine church with Rev R R Richey and Rev Savery officiating. Burial in Prairie Home cemetery Diller. Survived by daughter Elsie McAtee of Lincoln. Mrs Pittenger ill but improving. Family and friends from Beatrice and nearby towns attended.

County Board Sets BiMonthly Meetings for Relief Claims

The county board will meet twice monthly on the first Tuesday and the 26th to receive and process relief claims. Claims must be filed by the 24th to ensure warrants are issued and available by the 10th of the following month. Late claims may be prepared earlier at the board’s discretion.

County Spelling Contest Scheduled in Jefferson County

The Jefferson County Spelling Contest will be held at the Court House Court Room on Saturday March 18 1939. It includes oral and written rounds using Eaton 1934 edition True Blue contest speller starting with fifth grade words. Open to rural or town eighth grade or below students with up to six contestants per school. Winners advance to Wilber April 10 for Intercounty Contest at Sioux City Iowa. Ruth Wallace Endicott Junior High School serves as committee chair.

Diller School Admin Plans Mental Tests for Students

Most Diller school children have been given mental tests this semester. Results are private, but any pupil or parent may obtain their child’s score and rank from Superintendent Sinkey.

County approves jail repairs and break proof upgrades

The county board authorizes new equipment and repairs for the county jail in the courthouse basement. The jail will be break proof and a shower bath will be installed, a luxury previously denied to inmates.

Despite cold and storm Diller High held the local declamatory contest with fifteen readings judged by Mrs Agnes Crane Wright of Steele City. Top performers earning superior or excellent ratings include Eleanor Richardson Lorene Achtemeier Lorene Achtemeier Freddie Drexler and others. Superior performers will advance to the county contest February 28 at Daykin.
