Henry Kullman a long time resident of this community died at his farm home three miles west of Diller Tuesday morning after a long illness. He was 84 and had been invalid for 20 years. Friday services are set at the funeral home at two o'clock and at the Lutheran church at 2 thirty in the afternoon. His obituary will be printed next week.
The Congregational church schedules February 18 at 11 a m for dedication of two silk flags a Christian flag donated by the Sunday School and a United States flag presented by Mrs R W Green in memory of her late World War I veteran husband. The program includes processions prayers solos and a benediction with invitation to service men gold star parents inductees and the public.
Mr Carl Schouelle president of Farmers Union Insurance Company and his wife with Mr and Mrs Henry Pingel left last Sunday for Omaha to attend the State Convention of the Farmers Union. The policy holders annual meeting was held on Tuesday with women planning to shop while men attended the meeting.
The Jefferson Counts American Legion Post in Fairbury Nebraska asks for names and addresses of people in service to be mailed to 901 D Fairbury before February 22 or called at 765 W or 764. They thank readers for cooperation.
P F C Arnold Lottman of the 77th Division, hospitalized in the Philippines with jungle fever and a bad foot, writes of nine days alone in the hills and hopes for release soon. His wife, just back in Steele City from Corvallis Oregon, had been at a General Hospital in Corvallis.
Ernest Jordening nearly photographed a truck in a dramatic fall through a bridge west of Frank Schmelle’s residence last Thursday afternoon. The loaded truck tipped overboard, injuring driver Raymond Kramer who deemed it his lucky day despite the accident.
Beatrice State Bank absorbs Liberty Bank deposits and loans after Liberty Bank halted new deposits on February 10. Beatrice State purchases remaining loans and takes over about $10,000 in deposits, according to Beatrice State president R W Trefz.
Miss Marjory Fouts daughter of Mr and Mrs K C Fouts a teacher in Ord schools suffered a fractured arm and bruises when the car she rode in overturned on icy pavement near Grand Island All occupants of the vehicle were bruised and injured Miss Marjory Fouts is granddaughter of Mrs Elizabeth Fouts of this place
A basket dinner is planned in the Methodist church basement after the morning worship services. The event will feature a talk titled Crusade for Christ.
Mr and Mrs Folkert Gebhard celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary with a noon dinner and a three tier cake. Family and friends attended from Adams DeWitt Pickrell Rice Springs Kanss Diller and England France army member Sgt Frank E Gebhard was unable to attend due to overseas service.
Serenus B. Viers of Diller Nebraska has graduated from the Aviation Electrician's Mate school at Jacksonville Florida and earned promotion to Seaman First Class AEM. He enlisted May 19 1944, trained at Farragut Idaho, and passed through Fairbury en route coast to coast. His parents Dr and Mrs Viers learned of his progress by a Sunday call from Kansas City.
A party for all service men's wives of Diller and vicinity was hosted at Mrs. Harold Henrichs home on Thursday evening with Bunco and games. Prizes went to Mrs. Elmer Sasse and Mrs. Donald McKenzie. the group plans a Servicemen's wives club meeting monthly starting in March with local hostesses.
Eldon Fanders was badly injured last Friday when an acetylene welder exploded at the farm home north west of Diller. His left thumb was blown off and he and his father were knocked down in the garage. The blast shattered shed windows and nearby house windows. Eldon, a 1944 graduate of Diller High School, was taken to a Beatrice hospital.
Eilert Hallman visits Monday after learning of his father Henry Hallman’s serious illness. Cpl. Clarence Bullman comes home from Camp Livingston Louisiana early today.
Pvt Edwin DeBoer from Camp Roberts California spends fur lough in Fairbury visiting his father Fred DeBoer and his sisters families in Diller and Fairbury with wife and two children.
The Bruning army air base will be turned over to the air technical service command within a week and then become operative only if further use is found. Col C D Mc Alester announced from Oklahoma City. The base, once under the Second Air Force, was a premier training site for P 47 pilots. A guard unit will be kept at the base while under ATSC. Bruning originated as a satellite of the Topeka Kane base and was dedicated August 28 1943.
The Scott Miller household was awakened by a long distance call from Ensign Scott Miller Jr. He will arrive on leave the latter part of the week. He has been stationed as instructor at a Midshipman's school at Asbury Park New York and will be transferred March 1 to Princeton University as instructor.
Letter from Sgt. Ervin Roelfs in France dated January 22 recounts fried eggs for a late-night meal with comrade Odeneal. He describes aiding a farmer who lost cows and hogs to the Germans yet kept a single hog safe in a cupboard drawer.
Diller High School reports Naomi Snyder and Mr Hiatt with family visiting Lincoln to view Capt Richard Estes Hiatt, recently reported killed on Luzon. Local officials Hammond Ludington and Upson testified on L B 179 High School Tuition Bill urging funds while reception from Reynolds and Plymouth districts showed support. A group of forty four students and teachers traveled to Reynolds for the tournament finals, dining at the Cafe before midnight return. Robert EVANS, son of Eula Calkine, leaves Tuesday for Leavenworth to begin military training.
Capt Richard E Hiatt 645 So 17th Lincoln Nebraska was killed in action on Luzon January 16 his wife former Jean Carnahan told relatives He was born June 29 1919 a Lincoln High School graduate 1986 ROTC member University of Nebraska BS 1941 He enlisted after graduation served Fort Leonard Wood Fort Benning Camp San Luis Obispo deployed overseas July 1943 Survived by wife daughter Sarah Jo and parents He was grandson of Col and Mrs Hiatt and Mr and Mrs Ed Hughes.
