A holiday column mocks criminals and politics with puns on Santa Claus and counterfeit five dollar bills. It notes Missouri courts ousting two Standard Oil affiliates and a $50 000 fine, plus local inheritance tax funds for road work and comparisons to British politics.
A Dec 12 1908 letter from Garland Wyoming describes strong farming yields wheat 38 bushels per acre oats 48 bushels per acre and flour testing 39 to 42 pounds per bushel. The writer reports government water laterals near completion, oil wells, abundant gas, cheap fuel, a Powell meeting on sugar beets, and proximity to a coal mine.
Dr Leach a Fairbury dentist appears in town notes with Miss Ballards directory and souvenir shop. The RACKET shop advertises goods as Christmas gifts. A Burlington bridge crew based near Diller reports a robbery of 75 dollars and a 35 dollar watch with a suspect named Curley connected to the theft.
Laura A Stamp Mills, born February 10 1854 in Nolin Kentucky, died December 14 1908 near Hendley Nebraska at age 54. Survived by husband William P Mills and seven children, funeral at Prairie Home Cemetery with Degree of Honor and Knights and Ladies of Security members in attendance.
