Snow Fence Gap Delays Diller-Fairbury Road

Residents of Diller and Fairbury complain as a missing snow fence along the PW F in Jefferson County last fall causes snow drifts to block the road. Drivers divert via No 3, Jansen, or No 3-S through Steele City, adding nine to ten miles while the PW F to Beatrice remains clear and passable.

New Grocery Store to Open Early Next Year

A store building across from the Record office is partitioned for a new grocery. Robert Hughes of Steele City has rented the space and plans an up-to-date grocery by year’s start. He is Bert Hughes’ son. his brother Lloyd runs a Steele City store. Hughes family will live in the Greenwood residence in the northwest part of town.

Eat Their Own Weight In 31 Days At Midland College

Midland College in Fremont tracked 108 students living on campus and found each student consumes his own weight plus 12 pounds of food every 31 days. The Lincoln Star notes averages include 5 pounds milk for coffee 35 pounds vegetables 18 pounds fruit 12 pounds meat and other items with about 5 eggs per month.

Christmas Program by Young People at Congregational Church

The Christian Endeavor Society presents its annual Christmas program Sunday evening at 7 30 featuring Christmas music by the High School Girls Ninette a violin duet and Christine Parmenter's story David's Star of Bethlehem. The event invites the community to attend and recall last year's beauty.

Mrs Minnie Packer Dies at Chester Nebr at 71

Mrs Minnie Packer died Sunday at her home south of Chester Nebraska. She was 71. Funeral services were held Tuesday and she was buried in Chester cemetery beside her husband Charles Packer. Her sister in law is Mrs Greider.

Mrs Effie Fox Dies After Long Illness

Mrs Effie Fox wife of Otto Fox died around three o'clock Thursday morning after a long cancer battle. There are no children. Funeral services are planned for Sunday afternoon at 1:30 at the Waggoner funeral home and 2:00 at the Methodist church with Rev Drew presiding. Burial will follow in Steele City cemetery.

The Nebraska Methodist conference appoints Rev Harry F Huntington of Crete to fill the Fairbury church vacancy after the death of Rev Townsend. Car stolen in Diller town during basketball game

1934 Plymouth sedan taken from Main Street in front of the gym while W E Anderson, assistant cashier at Diller State Bank, left it unlocked with key in the switch. No trace found and no insurance. It is the town's first reported car theft.

The first team led early and stayed ahead 28 to 16, with Benford Henrichs and Harold Achtemeier scoring key baskets. Reynolds’ victory ties Diller with Endicott as county contenders, with a showdown set for Friday December 21 on the Diller floor.

Beatrice Poultry Show Highlights Hubka Couple

Beatrice held a poultry show Monday with a fine exhibition noted. Mr and Mrs Rudy Hubka entered Rhode Island Reds and reportedly earned prize money of about $20. On returning home a car cut in and forced them to stop at gunpoint, suggesting the thief knew about the cash.

Burlington Engine Loses Wheel on Through Train

Last Friday morning Burlington engine No. 2971 led passenger train No. 14 through Diller yards when a 10 inch journal on the right trailer wheel broke off and caused wheels to leave the track. The train dragged a broken trailer before stopping near the east switch. air brakes failed, delaying service an hour or two until a wrecking crew and replacement engine moved the crippled locomotive to shops. Kaura was engineer and Streka fireman on No. 14.

Change in Basketball Finals Announcement Divides Championship

Announcement splits the high school finals into two sites and dates. Class A games run March 13 to 16 at Lincoln University Coliseum Nebraska with sixteen teams.
