Christmas gift days approach shoppers are urged to support home merchants by using bank checks and shopping early. Come in this week to start a checking account if you do not have one, with deposits protected by the Nebraska Depositors Guaranty Fund.
Theo Henrichs and Alvin Cavett, sons of A. Cavett, visited at L. M. Cavett’s home with their families over the weekend and returned to Grand Island on Sunday.
A cold week kept temperatures around 18 degrees below Saturday and Thursday mornings. Forecasters say a slight warmup is expected to begin soon.
A French scientist achieved a yield of forty two tons of potatoes per acre by treating seed tubers with sulphate of ammonia. He soaked the potatoes twenty four hours in a solution of six pounds saltpeter, six pounds sulphate of ammonia and twenty five gallons of water. After soaking they stood to drain a day to swell buds before planting.

J W Fouts has been appointed as a member of the Fund Administration Committee of Jefferson County. The appointment has been accepted, and his oath of office has been properly executed and returned.

The College of Agriculture horticultural department urges using spare time this season to prune trees. Remove dead wood and crowded branches, make smooth wounds, and coat with lead paint. Wash spongy tissue from cavities with creosote and fill with cement, ideally on a wild day.
The Fairbury News warns of a postwar probe into hometown Germans who aided the enemy or hindered war effort. It calls for internment of sympathizers in Jefferson County and confiscation of their property for refusing Red Cross or YMCA donations and boycotting critical papers.

Postmaster J O Blauser sells his first shipment of war savings and thrift stamps. The kit includes a twenty-five cent thrift stamp, a folded card with space for sixteen stamps, and mottos urging saving. Stamps cost $4.12 each for two months and redeemable at $5 on January 1 1923.
The YMCA war fund is described as well spent with soldiers using Y M C A rooms for letters lectures and mail. Kenneth Fouts recounts rapid promotion from private to cadet at the aviation field in San Antonio earning 30 to 100 dollars monthly, and locals expect a lieutenant’s commission.
August Seager left his Colorado home for Hemingford Nebraska after fourteen years in Jefferson county. He reported to the Fairbury Journal that he began with $500 and four wagonloads of property, then departed with two carloads of property and $14,000 in money and real estate, averaging about $1,000 per year in gains.
In Wiemers-Renz on December 12 1917 at the Gee home Pauline Christine the daughter of Mr and Mrs Renz married Henry Wiemers in a ring ceremony officiated by Rev Teckhaus under a flower arch. A 60 guest reception followed with white decor. The couple will farm southwest of town on Seede Wiemers’s land.
Regular services are set for next Sunday December 16. Rev J Wallace Larkin is in Omaha this week with family. His daughter Mildred Rogers will sing at a Red Cross benefit concert Thursday evening. Mr Larkin will be home for the following Sundays services.
The Methodist ladies annual bazaar and supper in the church basement drew strong attendance despite extreme cold. Regular Sunday services continued. midweek prayer and Bible meetings will move to homes to save coal, with hoped-for increased attendance. The pastor plans Rock Creek next Sunday for regular service and Epworth events accompany morning Sunday school and sermon.
