Bernard Behrends shows improvement after serious mumps illness. His brother Henry contracted the disease Thursday but with milder symptoms. Mrs Behrends and several children have also had mumps recently, with Bernard and Henry being the newest cases. The family hopes for quick restoration of health.
The note discusses completing the Diller History with research work and manuscripts by January and then checking for errors before book form. It adds that a year is reasonable for such a project and mentions planning the next picnic around that time.
Bethel school district No. 86 in Gage county was closed all last week due to scarlet fever or scarletina. It reopened last Monday. Families of Gera Henrichs and Henry Saathoff are under quarantine. Alice at the Henrichs home and two Saathoff girls are affected.
Davis and Son report records a quit claim from Anna J. Fanders to Dedrick V. Fanders affecting fractions of lots 13 14 15 in Block 6 Diller. The Fanders Garage is set to pass to Dede Fanders as part of settling his father’s estate.

Mrs J S Taylor reports via letter from Iowa Lutheran hospital Des Moines that Dr Taylor suffered a spine injury and she herself has bruises but is okay. The letter references an automobile accident near Des Moines last week.
A Sunday night broadcast on KFOR featured a joint operetta by Nebraska Wesleyan University and the University of Lincoln with a 60 member chorus including Maxine Fry. Some listeners were disappointed due to interference during the program.

A three inch crushed rock coat will be laid over main street and key routes for 70 foot widths, with other streets covered 20 feet and graded. 4680 cubic yards of rock to be hauled from VanHook farm. a second hand crusher may cost 300 dollars. Total expense 200 dollars plus 1500 dollars actual village outlay, funded by liquor tax and WPA funds. Work begins once crusher arrives and local labor is used.

Hubert Manning former Steele City Nebraska postmaster pleaded guilty in federal district court to embezzling about 75 dollars in postal receipts. The crime stemmed from arrangements made prior. Manning was arrested months ago and his wife has served as postmistress at Steele City since.
The Cla tonia Leader launches under editor Chris Baker of Cortland Nebraska The paper is printed at the Cortland Sun office and its first weekly issue has circulated locally reflecting a new community newspaper effort.
Grade school performers presented an operetta titled The King's Sneezes at the Diller Opera House directed by Miss B Marie Hansen with music instructor help. About fifty children acted in bright costumes, led by Roger Diller as King Nicholas and Betty Grabber as Queen Dorothy in a scene of kings, queens and beggars.
Senator Callan of Odell Representatives Sumners and Brandt and former state senator Kenneth Wherry testified before the state pardon board on Wednesday supporting Ted Wells in his clemency request for an eight year manslaughter sentence for the 1932 killing of a federal officer. No opposition was offered.
The Steele Bros. won the contract to spread gravel on the highway from Steele City to two miles east of Odell. Scheerer Gravel Co. of Hebron will spread gravel on 8-S from Steele City to Fairbury and on No. 15 from Fairbury to the Kansas line.
