Mrs Elizabeth Hughes injured the second finger of her left hand while using a meat grinder at the store. First aid was given at the Waggoner store and Dr. Rice treated her at his office. A skin graft from her shoulder was planned to cover the exposed bone, aiming to avoid amputation and preserve piano ability.
Mrs. Rev. W. H Clark learned of her brother Charles Cox death in Fairmont. The Clark family traveled to Daykin to stay with sister Mrs. Zabel and then attended the funeral Wednesday.
Mr and Mrs John Hayworth of Omaha visited their uncle and aunt Mr and Mrs Isaac Saylor last Sunday. Mrs Saylor had a sinking spell that morning but improved during the day. The Hayworths returned home Sunday evening.
Edward Schmidt nine year old son of Mrs Marie Schmidt and grandson of Mr and Mrs Gerd Henrichs Sr. was operated on about 10 30 P M Saturday night for ruptured appendix at Odell hospital. He is getting along as well as can be expected.
Mr and Mrs D V Fanders Wendell and Gretchen visited Guide Rock last Thursday to dine with Mrs Fanders father sister and others the Lamberts They returned to Diller in the evening.
D V Fanders and Josao Fanders received word Friday morning of the death of their cousin Miss Gertrude Fanders at a Lincoln convalescence home where she had been confined for some time.
Frank Cully is slowly recovering from arthritis at the Veterans Hospital in Lincoln. The condition affects the joints of the bones.
Mr and Mrs Ralph Sieford announce the birth of a daughter at Odell hospital on November 20 1941 The couple resides 54 miles south and 13 miles west of Diller in the vicinity of the area named for the family.
Little Carol Ben Freitag son of Mr and Mrs Carl Freitag had his tonsils removed last Wednesday at Fairbury and is getting along nicely.
Mr and Mrs J Orval Cherry and daughter Betty traveled from Valentine Nebraska to Diller visiting Mrs Cherry's mother Mrs Jennie Upson and relatives including Chester and Robert Upson and Mrs Jas Pickard. They left twenty years ago for Valentine and had a 50 bushel corn year with truck farming nearby.
Miss Frances Bolender married J. Edmund Wrigley on Thanksgiving Day at the First Christian church in Fairbury at 4 pm with Rev. M Lyeral officiating. Pearl Bulender was bridesmaid Frederic K Wrigley best man Gwen Milbourne sang and Mrs Max Logan played nuptial music. A dinner for relatives followed at the Bolender home and the couple left for a brief wedding trip to Iowa.
Mrs Willis Clark and Petty with Mrs Clara Allen traveled to Lincoln Saturday, returning Sunday evening. They stayed at the H Z Dilier home and visited Effie at her brother’s well filled table Sunday noon. Effie delighted in the birthday cake with lighted candies and the birthday song.
Mr and Mrs Carl Ludington enjoyed their Thanksgiving dinner last Thursday at a cafe in Grand Island. Friday and Saturday they visited old friends at Dannebrog a small town near Grand Island where the Ludingtons taught school before moving to Diller.
Bob Dale of Wayne Nebraska appears among the students named in the 1941 1942 Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. He is a grandson of Mrs Carrie Wrigley of Lincoln Nebraska.
Max Braasch son of the late Carl Braasch currently in CCC at Franklin Nebraska arrived Tuesday evening to visit his aunt Mrs Scott Miller and other relatives in the area He has eight days leave of absence.
Theodore J. Henrichs and Miss Peggy Drew of Omaha together with Miss Guilia Thoms of Milford spent Thanksgiving Day with Mrs. J. C. Henrichs of Diller.
Coach Armstrong led his high school squads to Odell for a home town game watched by the largest crowd since Mr. Majors became superintendent. Odell first team edged Diller 27 to 23 while Diller second team won 20 to 10.
The Ditler Lather League staged a three act comedy drama at the opera house last evening. The young society delivered credible performances and high class interludes between acts with Freddie Gargels performing Prosperity and Miss Katherine Swindier reading Brotherly Love. Music by The Dippy Diller Diddiers featured the Schipperts and Mrs Lee Schipper with Ed Weers.
The Book Lovers' Club will meet Friday afternoon December 12 at the home of Mrs. Max Logan. Mrs. Mayborn will review two new short books The Snow Goose by Paul Gallico and The Dram Goes Dead by Bess Streeter Aldrich. Public invited.
Lincoln officials announced on Wednesday that the Rudge and Guenzel department store has closed its doors after operating 54 years. The store employed about 250 people and will remain closed.
The Dorcas society of the Methodist church hosts a bazaar and supper this Saturday in the church basement. Supper costs 30 cents for adults and is available for children too. Come and enjoy a pleasant afternoon and evening.
Free lunch pancakes and coffee plus 33 door prizes at Jordenings Store in Harbine this Saturday December 6. Everyone invited.
Three University of Nebraska students spent Thanksgiving with family. Robert Duis lived 30 miles south of town, Scott Miller Jr. stayed in town, and Margaret Barnett visited her parents on the Pitts place southeast of town. She returned to Lincoln after attending the football game.
James Garrett aged 74, a longtime Steele City resident since 1888, died at his home Friday evening after a stroke. Survived by three brothers and three sisters. Funeral held Monday at 1 30 p m at home and 2 p m at Presbyterian Church with Rev R S Williams officiating. Burial in Steele City Cemetery with Waggoner's funeral service.
Mrs. C. C. Aden is ill in Millbank South Dakota with visitors including John Lottman and the Sasse couple returning home after a midweek trip. Mrs. Aden shows some improvement as crop conditions in the Milbank area are reported good with corn at .60 bushels.
A daughter was born last Sunday at a local hospital to Mr and Mrs Ervie Keez Wandalee of Fairbury. Grandparents are Mr and Mrs LaVern Pickard of Fairbury and Mr and Mrs Jas Pickerd of Diller. The family expresses happiness.
Superintendent and Mrs. Lad ington hosted Calh high school basketball players at their home last Wednesday. The event featured crater stews and trimmings with meal prepared and served by Mrs. Eula Calkina and Mrs. Iva Hill.
Louis Fasse arrived Sunday from Sheyboygan Wisconsin where he had stayed with relatives the past three months. He will be a guest in the home of his sons Fréd and Arthur.
Mrs. Clarence Steffen led the local Women's Club in a Red Cross Membership drive. The roll call lists forty six members pledging one dollar each, including Gretchen Wohlfarth, Mrs Holle, Dora Wohlfarth, O J Mayborn, C R Hughes, Geo Rahman, L M Cavett, Lizste Weers and many others. Chester A Dennson, Bell Grass field representative, sends congratulations to Diller for its strong support.
Willard Kim asserts a clear position after arriving at Camp Grant. He states he just arrived at the training camp and presents his stance plainly.
The Jefferson County Cross Chapter announces its fourth meeting and a brief American Legion event on Wednesday evening December 10. Local members expected to convene at the usual venue for fellowship and reports.
Contingent includes Max Thompson with parents in town Ligud Lamb with family to the north and Wellin Dean at the Boys Home as part of a local junior college gathering.
Rev Grieb presided over a service including a brief sermon while installing a lamp. The event focused on dedication and religious reflection within the gathered congregation.
