Fire Destroys George Rohe Home Near Diller
A Friday morning fire completely destroyed the George Rohe home six miles west and four miles north of Diller. Firefighters saved the barn and granary but nothing of value inside the house. The blaze likely started in a stove. Red Cross aid was requested and farm owner William Walworth of Fairbury owns the property. The Rohe family stayed with Mrs Robis in Fairbury.

New Crop Insurance Program Offered for 1949
Jefferson County leaders announce a new federal wheat crop insurance plan for 1949. The program, coverage in four county areas, offers low premiums of seven tenths of a cent per acre and deductible operating-expense tax advantages. It protects against drought hail rust wind frost and other risks, with premiums deductible. For details contact Jefferson County Agricultural Extension office. The Diller Picnic plans announced for August 20 21 feature Indian Creek parade entertainment bands carpenters trio polka and bohemian waltz segments and a big festival Apr/May notes.

Former Resident Receives Tribute at University of Maryland
The Maryland State Council of Homemakers Clubs sponsored four programs in June honoring Miss Verna M. Kellar assistant director of Extension at the University of Maryland. The tribute recognized her 1923 development of an extension program for College Week for Women to bring science into rural homes. A portrait of Miss Kellar was presented to the University Venia Kellar is a former resident of Diller and visited Clare Waggoner’s home two years ago en route to the West Coast.

Diller Clowns Steal Hanover Picnic Show
The Diller clowns led by Joe Nippetts with a fire truck and Dede Fanders in a Ford captivated Hanover picnics on Monday and Tuesday. Their show won all laurels and earned invitations to other events. Several Diller band members joined the Hanover band in the parade.

A large Midwest Luther League Convention gathers at St Pauls Lutheran Church Diller with 265 expected attendees from Nebraska Iowa Missouri Kansas possibly Oklahoma. The event runs Tuesday to Thursday with vesper service led by Rev Jobman and talks by Harold Parks and Governor Val Peterson, plus business sessions at the Opera House and recreation at Diller Park.

Whisker Club photo at 3 pm August 30 City Hall. Harley Clark underwent bladder ulcer surgery Wednesday at Lincoln General Hospital. He is employed by Dempster Co and lives in Burrice.
