Nebraska census era marks first territorial organization
The 1854 Nebraska census laid the groundwork for territorial government. Governor Cuming divided the settled area into eight counties and set up elections for a territorial legislature and a congressional delegate, though marshals failed to collect full data. The first census recorded 2,732 residents with 929 white males and 1818 south of the Platte, plus 13 slaves.
