Wit and Humor Snippets Across Newspapers

A collage of humorous quotes and quips from various papers lampooning manners, marriage, travel, and social foibles. Jests touch on judges, pennies, diaries, crinoline, and a relic of elopements, with sly digs at pretensions and urban life.

A Curious Cave of Human Bones Near Columbia California

Joseph Chettle, arriving from Columbia in Tuolumne County, reports a cave of human bones about two and a half miles from Columbia. The marble chamber spans 286 feet with offshoots, a blue and yellow glow from lights, and a scent of bones. About ten individuals lie there, no weapons or pottery found, suggesting a long burial without artifacts. Chettle kept the bones as mementos and described ghastly skulls scattered in a 140-acre tract owned by Columbia Marble Company.
