D M Clewell advertises an early spring sale of dress trimmings including braids gimps passimentries and beaded gimps in vivid colors. It highlights 412 wool suitings 39 and 40 inches wide at 50 cents a yard and a broad assortment of dress goods from silks laces and lawns to muslin underwear with notes on spring garments and general stock.
In a tale of hunger and cunning a group of ants schemes to raid a pantry. A determined ant leader builds a bridge of plaster soldiers across a narrow gap and the army marches forward then all cross and perish, leaving the narrator to ponder the river crossing and the lesson of perseverance.
On the Ohio and Mississippi a coal boat crew led by Joe Trick rescues a girl who falls from a steamer. Trick dives, retrieves her, and the rescued child is reunited with her father Mr Carroll, who then promises Jimmy a river post and rewards the crew. Williams, the River Queen pilot, is chastened. Trick earns a senior berth for Jimmy while Williams may receive a new steamer.
An 1889 Plymouth report describes an extraordinary corn crop grown by David Drew from grains found in Egyptian mummy cloth. The plant stood over six feet, with leaf and spikelet features unlike modern maize. Each spikelet bore individual corn grains with separate husks, lacking a tassel and silks.
A young woman in Central Park, described as attractive and English‑speaking, is approached by two suited men while another man questions her in English. She repeatedly responds I no speak Englees, provoking comic confusion until the final passerby reveals she has a doctor’s order to walk and speaks perfect English.
