An explosion at five tanks of the Imperial Oil Company's Dartmouth plant on Halifax Harbor east side shook the city early today. People fled their homes as flames lit the sky, many recalling the 1917 Mont Blanc disaster, though there were no reports of loss of life or serious injuries.
Mrs Emily Knowles Spiker, who stirred Baltimore society by marrying Guy Spiker after coming from England as the mother of Perley Spiker's child, has vanished from her east Baltimore home. Her husband says she left weeks ago with a note declaring she no longer wished to live with him. the child had been adopted by Perley Spiker.
Washington reports the Senate Finance Committee voted to retain the 32 percent maximum income surtax in the House bill. A vote on the repeal date for the excess profits tax is set for tomorrow. The panel also favored raising head of family exemptions from 2000 to 2500 and dependent exemptions from 200 to 400, effective next January 1.
Roscoe Fatty Arbuckle motion picture actor booked on murder charge in connection with the death of Virginia Rappe after a party at his hotel suite. He remained in jail overnight with no bail allowed. An inquest is planned and a grand jury presentation is anticipated.
From Detroit to the Banner, September 12, the Michigan Motion Pictures Exhibitors Association ordered all Arbuckle pictures pulled. Exhibitors statewide were told to halt showings until the Virginia Rappe case is resolved. In Sandusky, T. M. Cook was named temporary postmaster at Huron pending a permanent appointment among several candidates, including women.

The alien property custodian said a complaint is prepared to seize all property in which Grover C. Bergdoll had interest, including gold coins taken from the treasury. Associated Press reports at Ohio State University that the prior downward trend in food prices is checking. July 1921 prices show a return to an upward movement with farm prices rising 1.7 percent while retail food costs increased 2.7 percent from the prior month. Farm products were 15 percent above prewar averages. wholesale food products 34 percent higher.
A plate glass window at the Scribner drug store on North Main Street was broken Sunday afternoon by a stone thrown from a passing automobile. A small round hole was made in the glass.
Hayden Canfield a garage owner fatally shot Mrs. Glenn Drury in his shop then killed himself. Mrs Drury’s husband was performing in a theatre nearby. Miss Esther Thomas of Niles, present in the garage, is held as a witness. Police say jealousy sparked the tragedy.
The weather bureau announced that the much cooler weather with frosts promised for Ohio early this week will not materialize. The cold wave prevalent in the west Saturday is being pushed back into Canada, with only a slight edge possibly touching the Great Lakes and Ohio seeing somewhat cooler weather tonight.
The Steamship George Washington arrived from New York with news of a murder suicide at sea. Josef Josebek, a third class passenger from New York, attacked cabin mates and killed Emil Karl Kanet of Akron, a chemist, before taking his own life. One other passenger was wounded. both victims were buried at sea.
George Pew Wetmore, 15th years old as stated, former Rhode Island senator and two term governor, died of heart failure in Boston. He had arrived from Newport for medical consultation and served as governor 1885 to 1887 and in the U.S. Senate from 1896 to 1914. Rev C L Cobagen resigns as pastor at Kyan kolival Church to take charge at Westeryilte.
Floods across Colorado Brazos and other Texas rivers from heavy rains caused millions in damage. Georgetown reported two dead and three missing while San Antonio area counted 45 to 47 bodies. Debris and rehabilitation marked the day as areas slowly recover.
Investigators in Chester, Pennsylvania, said no criminal negligence could be blamed for the Saturday night collapse of the Third Street bridge footway over the Chester River, which killed 24 people. Engineers found a defective gusset plate so located that prior inspections could not have revealed it.
Charles Schultz, one of three convicted post office bandits who escaped from Locke county jail on Labor Day, was recaptured in Crissy, Ohio, 18 miles west of Toledo, in an attic of a farmhouse. He offered no resistance.
