Hundreds at the funeral of late D. G. Stone
Mt Vernon honors Knox county World War I dead with a public funeral at Gay Street M E Church. Dan C Stone Jr the first Knox county soldier to die in the war lay in state at the Knox County courthouse. A guard from the American Legion stood watch as business houses closed one hour for the ceremony. The procession, caisson, and flag draped casket moved to the church where clergy and veterans spoke of sacrifice and patriotism. The service closed with taps and burial at Mound View cemetery.

Noted Bandit Gardner At Large After McNeil Island Escape
Roy Gardner, the noted train bandit, escaped from the McNeil Island federal prison during a prison grounds baseball game. Guards say he may have reached the mainland a mile away as the search found no sign of him. During the breakout Everett Impyn, a Camp Lewis veteran serving life, was killed by guards, and Lawardus Bogart was wounded and recaptured. He was witnessed by Heber H. Wotan, superintendent of federal prisons and Harding’s brother-in-law.

Washington Sept. 6 Brigadier General Band xeitz recommended withdrawal of the 26th Infantry from West Virginia coal fields. President Harding approved the move and Weeks ordered the regiment to Camp Dix New Jersey. Removal will cut federal troops in the state to about 1100 men and Weeks called it a likely Rhine like situation with no disorder while the flag flies. Madison WV Sept. 6 reports failed to confirm any bodies after a 16 mile Spruce Fork Ridge search. Soldiers combed the area but found no graves or bodies and all armed men reportedly left the district.
