From the Gazette files dated Thursday Oct 4 1888 the first snow for the season fell last Saturday. Rev. Gay the new M I minister arrived with his family and will preach next Sunday evening. Four bushels of wheat stored in Dr Roebucks sacks were stolen a few nights ago. A bon exhibition in the show window was placed by Esq J B Douglass. The peach measured 915 inches in circumference.

Mrs Samuel Longenecker of Weilersville widow of Longenecker died at her home last Thursday after weeks of illness. She was mother of Supt H F Longenecker formerly of this place and leaves her husband four daughters and three sons. Funeral was held Saturday.

Rural Mail Carrier Killed Crossing Train
Webster W. Rogers, rural mail carrier of Lodi, was killed instantly last Thursday morning when his field vehicle was struck by Train No. 3 on the B and O track east of the village. The horse was also killed after being injured by the impact.

Lightning Claims Student at Case District Schoolhouse
Ernest Stackhouse son of Frank Stackhouse was killed by lightning at the Case district schoolhouse four miles northeast of Lodi at 2 PM Tuesday. Several other students were badly stunned and the building sustained considerable damage.

The Sonnenberg Fire and Lightning Insurance Association notes a heavy loss when M. C. Burkholder’s large bank barn near Elton burns down at 1:30 AM. Four horses, eight hogs, 45 tons of hay, 550 bushels of wheat, harnesses and equipment are lost. contents insured for 1400 and the barn for 1500, total insurance 2000, estimated loss about 4500. Beach City and Mt Eaton Banks Closed by State Official
The Citizens Bank of Beach City was closed by State Bank Superintendent Emery Lattimer Wednesday of last week. Depositors will be paid in full later, with funds of about $30,000 for nearby school districts and villages held in escrow. The Mt Eaton bank, run by the same operators and closed the same day, held about $10,000 of $125,000 in deposits. the remainder was at Beach City.
