German U boats attacked the American coast off New Jersey and Maryland, sinking several unarmed merchant ships. American patrols sweep the Atlantic to curb the enemy. Reports indicate Germany has a base from which the U boats operate.
Robert Lawrence writes from Camp Merritt dated May 29 1918 after a 48 hour train ride via Cleveland Buffalo Rochester Wilkes Barre and New York City. He praises the camp treats and plans a hunting trip after the war while noting corned beef and hardtack and a pass to Decor ation in New York. He reflects on friends home front thrift stamps and liberty bonds and hopes to return briefly to settle business before rejoining the army. He signs as Bos with his future address to Co. B 329th Inf 83rd Division AEF.
Memorial Day exercises at Dalton drew a large, perhaps one of the largest crowds for the occasion. Hot sultry weather held off rain until after the programs and parade, which featured the Red Cross ladies. Hon. Jay Buchwalter of Warren delivered a timely, clear speech as a 25 piece band provided inspiring music.
Canton congressman Roscoe C McCulloch met with President Wilson at the White House to win support for his alien slacker bill. The measure would compel military service from subjects and citizens of nations allied to the United States in the war who reside in America. It has passed the House and awaits Senate action, reportedly stalled by state department opposition.
Miss Rose Sprunger and Walter W. Weaver were married last Saturday afternoon at the bride's pastor Rev A W Sommer home. Witnesses were Elmer and Lydia Sprunger. They will reside at 14 Sharp Street Salem Ohio after June 4.
The Gazette lists patrons who paid subscriptions since the last report. Names include Elmer Stuck in December 1918 and Edward Chatelain in June 1919 among others such as I. A. Douglass Orén Schultz Mrs L Belle Fletcher Frances McElhinney H C Akers Lewis May F P Snyder Frank Snodgrass and A Donold with varied 1918 1919 months.
Daniel Thomas son of Mr and Mrs Daniel Thomas of Massillon and formerly of Dalton was seriously burned last Wednesday at Central Steel Co Massillon while operating an electric crane. A ladle of molten steel spilled when the cable broke burning the three men and clothing was burned from their bodies. They were taken to City hospital and Thomas condition was listed as not very favorable with little hope of recovery.
On Tuesday evening May 28 1918 the graduating class of 1918 and invited friends gathered at the Douglass home. Rooms were decorated in blue and white the class colors. The evening featured music and games with refreshments later served. Attendees wished to meet again and thanked the Douglasses for hospitality.
Beginning June 12 the store will close at noon every Wednesday during the summer months. B. F. Harper signs the notice.
The American who buys a Liberty Bond and then sells it immediately has performed only half a service for his country. Buying bonds and selling them soon after raises the war burden by lowering market value. Liberty Bonds are the safest and one of the best investments in the world. Selling them without necessity is poor business and un-American.
Morning and evening services will be held at the Presbyterian church on Sunday June 9 conducted by Rev. Brice of Sebring. All cordially invited to attend.
Local items include Dale Goudy driving for McClain Co. Massillon and Waterman and Conklin selling self filling fountain pens at Scott's. Travelers Clarence James of Flushing and Mrs Clarence Myers with her son visited nearby towns. Masillon cornetist Ralph E Tracy aided Gary's band May 30. Families, vacations and visits noted across Dalton and Akron. A band concert drew a large town crowd. Master Don Harper bought pasture land at $3750.

A quiet wedding united W. W. Weaver of Salem Ohio and Rose Springer of Sonnenberg at Rev. Adam Sommer’s home. They plan a two week trip after their stay at the groom’s home. Mrs. Albert Loganbill's relatives welcomed her arrival with Clyde and Arville.
Mrs Effie E Kleppe of Averill Minnesota reports relief from rheumatism and kidney trouble after using Forey Kidney Pills. She says a half bottle completed the cure and praises the pills for weakness and pain in kidneys bladder back muscles and joints. A J White endorses the product as unequaled for such ailments.
Mrs Elizabeth Pratt visited daughter Iva in West Lebanon. George Shanklin was a business visitor in Orrville. Dale Marshall aids farming with relatives Shanklin at Beach City. Miss Blanche Flounders visiting Massillon relatives. Hattie Blackston teaches music locally. Hickman family and Rebecca Hickman visit Shanklin family. Jiggs.
The Dalton band was augmented on the afternoon of the 3rd by E. E. Sturgis a baritone and Chas Erwin a trombone, former members.
