An oscillatory quake at 10:53 Sunday rattled Mexico City and surrounding valley causing stampedes at Arcor theater and mass panic. Water pipes burst flooding streets as guards contained chaos in Bolem prison. forecaster Juan Contreras had predicted further earthquakes through 1895.
Indianapolis January 2 Governor Matthews states his message includes strong recommendations aimed at suppressing Robyism in the state. The note signals intent to curb the Roby question and defend policy standards.
Washington observes the New Year at the White House with Mrs Cleveland hosting the cabinet ladies and the diplomatic corps. Ownership and operation remain undisclosed but it is described as a St. Paul enterprise. extension north to Hayward and possibly Superior awaits completion to Menomonee.
St Paul reports Charles Hochstadter former manager of the United States Clothing company that recently failed left his affairs in order with no unpaid accounts. The sudden disappearance sparks speculation his fortune was to shield assets from the firm's settlement. observers think assets may exceed liabilities.
John L Nagle M D chief of the bureau of records reports that New York City had better health in 1894 than since 1814. Total deaths 41,212, down from 41,486 in 1893, with tenement deaths 26,149, a drop of 2,224 from last year.
The contractor with a large crew and graders arrives at Realta and starts building the Mexican International railroad line to Monte rey. The line will provide a direct route for the Mexican International and Southern Pacific systems to Monterey’s smelters.

Boston January 2. The incoming Massachusetts House of 239 members includes 193 Republicans and 46 Democrats. The 1894 House had 184 Republicans and 56 Democrats, reflecting a shift in party balance.

INDIANAPOLIS Jan 2 H G Phillips an Oelwein Iowa attorney arrived to locate ex congressman Walt Butler. He found Butler at the police station where Butler had gone to surrender. Phillips left for Iowa with Butler in the evening.
Fire started in a saloon and swept through Mix's hotel and Lang's general store along with two other buildings in Kut. The blaze damaged multiple properties and caused extensive destruction to the adjacent structures. Local fire crews responded to the scene and controlled the flames with no immediate reports of injuries.
