Germany Losing Money on Her Various Colonies
A London dispatch reports that Germany’s colonial ventures yield little revenue. Eight protectorates bring only about 2 million dollars annually while the Reichstag must approve 7.5 million for their support. Kiao Chau provides 90 thousand in revenue with a 3 million subsidy needed, and Southwest Africa yields 450 thousand against a 2 million budget. Deficits from 1898 and 1899 may require 800 thousand from the imperial fund.
