President Roosevelt, addressing 1000 merchants at a Washington banquet, says the New Deal policy remains sound. He asserts there is no danger of surplus goods and that maintaining consumer purchasing power will foster a period of greater production and employment.
Last night a meeting at Hotel Hancock launched the union of senior and junior Chambers of Commerce from Frederick Cumberland Hancock Frostburg and Hagerstown into a Welbknit development group. Brad Wolfe of Frederick was named temporary chair, Ralph W. Roger as temporary secretary, with an organization meeting set for Monday June 12 at Hotel Hancock. Each chamber to send one representative. James W. Gambrieler presided. Continued on Page 10.
Washington May 23 Chairman J Warren Madden of the Labor Relations Board told the Mouse Labor Committees that local unions affiliated with the AFL have recently sought board assistance more often. Madden cited figures on labor board cases in reply to claims the board favors the GT GO.
Four year old Charles Wilson in California died after hanging from a rope swing during an acrobatic attempt. His mother, Mrs Thomas D Wilson, found him unconscious at dinner time and resuscitation efforts failed.
Local thundershowers expected late tonight or Wednesday across Maryland and Chesapeake Bay areas. Warm conditions persist tonight with cooler intervals Wednesday afternoon and night. Winds shift from gentle to moderate. possible local thundersqualls noted.

In Crouch Idaho three western fugitives who escaped a prison hid at a mountain cabin base near Garden Valley. Surrounded by nearly 100 heavily armed men, guards and locals, they threw their weapon from a window and surrendered without a shot. Authorities continued search for a fourth fugitive Lonnie Walling, believed to have aided the escape.
Dr. R. L. Carey reports a 34 year old cake baked in a village now in Yugoslavia remains edible thanks to honey instead of sugar. He notes the cake would be fit to eat if dunked in coffee and allowed to soak sufficiently.
Cavalry Adjutant Georges Jonville of the Thirteenth Regiment of Dragoons was found guilty of espionage. He received 20 years in prison and loss of military rank, followed by 20 years of banishment from Branca. The May 22 report notes the verdict and penalties.
Two shares of Hagerstown Fair stock sold for 40.50 dollars a share at a price sale in front of the courthouse this morning. Joseph C. Snyder acted as the auctioneer.
William Brumbanegh an elderly offender received thirty days in jail from Justice Mo VLR Hostetter in city court this morning on a drunk and disorderly charge.
Queen Mary, widow of King George V, escaped serious injury after a car she was riding in overturned in Putney, West London. She rested at a doctor's house, then rode away in a royal car, though she appeared shaken and in shock. A house painter aided her exit by placing his ladder against the overturned vehicle.
The Elizabeth Street underpass proposal moves forward with bids invited by noon June 6 for a single span steel I-beam bridge with encased concrete substructure. The project, funded federally at about 120000 dollars for grade crossing elimination, will cost the city only for approach work, with Western Maryland Railroad tracks relocated.
A string of heavily loaded freight cars rolled out of a central mountain line near Cernanti and crashed into a passenger train, killing 13 and injuring more than 60. The incident occurred in Bucitarest on May 23.

Mary Wills, 30, of Pert Hamboy New Jersey, has a heart on the right side, stomach and spleen on the right, liver and appendix on the left, and a heart that faces backward. Plant physician Dr A B Kevarsky reports X rays show the condition, noting it may occur in about one in 10,006 cases.
Eugene Miller of Williamsport was convicted for assault and robbery of Alber tus Gardner WPA worker, receiving a three year sentence in the Maryland Penitentiary from Judge William A Husteyr. He was among five prisoners replied for sentence in May court, with Shelley Shrivers getting 18 months and Charles Lucas a year.
Orville Everhart, a World War I veteran, pleaded guilty to an indecent exposure offense and received three months in jail from Judge William A. Huster in circuit court. His case closed criminal court except for the Sweigert murder trial set to open Thursday. Russell Clark was acquitted of conducting a lottery.

The Grand Officers of the Grand Lodge of Maryland will be escorted by St Bernard Commandery Knights Templar to the City Hall site for the cornerstone laying. The procession begins at the Masonic Temple with the YMCA Band leading. Master Masons from Hagerstown and surrounding county are invited to join, assembly at 2 PM and ceremonies starting 3 PM.
Francis Joseph Spellman, once a grocer’s boy in Whitman Mass, was installed as the sixth Archbishop of New York at St Patrick’s Cathedral. The ceremony drew about 30 bishops and archbishops and thousands of worshippers as chimes rang and organ music filled the cathedral.
Two escaped convicts Archie Goodwin and James Patterson were shot by guards after a hand to hand fight near Cummins prison farm in Arkansas. Willie Rayford, a life prisoner, was recaptured without resistance. Another fugitive returned to camp, claiming he fled for safety as the stockade collapsed and several prisoners were injured.
Wagerstown's tax rate was set at 85 cents per $100 by the Mayor and City Council at a special meeting last night, unchanged from last year. A $1,179,000 budget for the coming fiscal year was approved, with most department budgets under prior years. Some WPA projects may be cut in favor of alley work keeping the same man count, and the council awarded the garbage removal contract for the year starting June 1 to W L French for $3,600.
Officials and citizens of Keedys ville plan the fifth annual homecoming for the week of August 6. Burgess Charles K. Taylor is president and Clifton Smith is general chairman. Republic Steel, a major U.S. producer, files a 7.5 million damage suit in federal court alleging that John L. Lewis, Philip Murray, and CIO officials conspired in 1937 to force plant closings across Ohio Pennsylvania Maryland Illinois New York and other states. The complaint targets 700 Ohioans identified as strikers or union officers.
About 65,000 workers were idled as Briggs Manufacturing strike halted production in seven plants. Chrysler shut 10 plants in Detroit and Indiana, limiting operations to Dodge trucks.
