Seven men were pulled to safety from the submarine Squalus as a rescue chamber was lowered to 240 feet, marking a historic first in U S naval history for depth rescues. Fifty nine men remained trapped while preparations continued for further descents and potential evacuations.

London, May 1. Queen Mary suffered an eye injury when her automobile overturned in Putney yesterday. Doctors report she passed a restless night but her general condition is satisfactory. She will be 72 Friday and canceled engagements for the coming days. Sir Richard Cruise and other physicians attended at Marlborough House.

Navy officials outline three backup rescue plans if the diving bell fails to save the 59 crew members aboard the submerged Squalus off New Hampshire. Weather must cooperate. options include water lings ascent, airline coupling to intake valves, and passing chains to lift the submarine with pontoons. The pontoon method proved viable on earlier subs but would take weeks.
The Ditunifie fields coal movement restores Western Maryland freight levels seen before mine shutdowns. Trains of loaded coal cars run almost solid this week, boosting water purchases for locomotives and leading to recall of furloughed workers or those on short schedules.
Work resumed this morning on the Indian Springs road project as a WPA effort. Most of the highway from the Indian Springs Store on the National Highway to the Pennsylvania line is completed. John Doe died in Naval Hospital after a week’s illness from a heart ailment. age 60.
The Paris AP recounts naval submarine calamities across the century. It notes four U S craft storms that killed 113 sailors, including the 1927 S-4 Paulus collision with the Coast Guard vessel Paulding near Provincetown, and the 1925 Rhode Island Block Island tragedy with 33 dead.
Blue Peter won the 155th Derby at Epsom on May 24 carrying Lord Rosebery’s colors. Fox Cub finished second, Heliopolis third, with Casanova fourth and Hypnotist out of the money. Blue Peter paid 7 to 2 after defeating 26 three year olds by four lengths. Fox Cub is Ed ward Esmond’s horse and Heliopolis ran early pace.
Eighteen state and twenty two defense witnesses have been summoned to testify in the murder trial of Charles E Sweigert in Circuit court tomorrow. Chief Judge D Lindley Sloan and Associate Judge William A Huster will preside. Sweigert is charged with murder over the March fatal shooting of Clayton De lauter a 19 year old. He is represented by Attorney J C Grice. This trial closes the Mar criminal court as all other cases have been disposed of. Before adjournment yesterday the lottery indictment against Frank Long was noted by the State Attorney.
Governor Herbert R. O Conor vetoed six bills and signed 64, including a controversial Occupational Disease measure and a 55 mph speed limit on dual highways. He approved a securities advertising regulation for political subdivisions and a funding procedure to match federal grants. He also backed a tax before license issuance provision.
Boston weather bureau reports improving conditions for the Squalus rescue. Forecaster G Harold Noyes says skies will clear, winds moderating to 12 to 18 mph with no thunder squalls or rain. A moderate northeast wind is expected to shift to the northwest later today.
The commissions of J Richard Rauth Charles W Boyer and Samuel C Strite as members of the Board of Election Supervisors for Washington county for two year terms beginning the first Monday in June were received at the office of Clerk of Court Edward Oswald from Annapolis today The three supervisors will qualify and take office June 35 Mr Rauth succeeds himself while Messrs Boyer and Strive will succeed Russell Geeting and EL 3 Knadler of Keedysville Mr Strive will be the Republican minority member of the new board
