NATO ministers endorse Western disarmament plan in Istanbul clash

ISTANBUL May 2 AP Western NATO foreign ministers meeting under martial law approval witnessed clashes between thousands of Turkish students and troops near City Hall. Casualties were minor as soldiers herded demonstrators with rifle butts and bayonets. The ministers endorsed the Western disarmament plan presented by Selwyn Lloyd for the five Western nations. The United States supports talks in Paris aiming to reduce tensions but warns solutions won’t be quick.

Morse Names Symington Third Choice For Democratic Nomination

Ex Postmaster Travis Knode Dies at 73 in Keedysville

Travis D. Knode former postmaster of Keedyville and longtime weather observer for the Daily Mail died at Washington County Hospital at 4 10 AM after an illness. He was 73 years old and previously served twenty years as station agent for the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. Born to the late Jacob A and Mollie Young Knode he was active in Republican circles in Keedysville. Continued on Page 3.

The American Newspaper Publishers Association reports that U S readers spent 131.7 million on weekday newspapers and 17.7 million on Sunday papers in 1959, totaling 1.55 billion dollars for daily and Sunday editions. The figure excludes advertising expenditures.

Frost and freeze damage threaten county fruit crops today

Washington County orchardists awaited survey results on apple and peach trees after a night frost. Temperatures dropped to 27 degrees, five below freezing, with many trees in vulnerable bloom stages. P.O. Receipts Climb at Hagerstown Post Office

Postmaster Thomas M. Simpson announced that Hagerstown post office receipts for last month totaled 77,871.45, up from 71,388.63 a year earlier. He cited parcel post rate changes as part of the rise but noted the overall gain likely reflects generally improving business conditions.

Man Gets Year Suspended Term

Albert D. Jones, 2, of 40 Clock Kuhn Avenue, was given one year suspended sentence in federal court in Baltimore after conviction for theft of a washing machine from an interstate shipment. The machine was taken from a Harris Motor Express truck. Jones was placed probative for two years.
