Welfare officials urged to reexamine WPA rolls in Maryland

Milton Patterson urged Maryland welfare officials to reassess WPA relief rolls across 23 counties. He argued only genuinely needy individuals should appear on WPA rolls, citing public misperception of the program. Anita Faatz noted relief rolls in northern states sometimes outpaced WPA rollout. No decision was made, with estimates of costs around 20000 dollars and concerns over summer suspensions and coal mine closures. Deputy head Harry Williar said a roll reduction is planned to about 10000 by July 1 from 12000 now.
