President Roosevelt received a TVA report today assessing freight rate structures across regions. The study, produced for the Tennessee Valley Authority, concludes there is no national freight rate system and that current rates hinder commerce and industrial growth nationwide.
A TVA economist compares regional freight charges, finding eastern shippers pay less per mile than western, southwest, and mountain Pacific routes. The report warns that lower eastern rates create a de facto protective scheme benefiting favored interests, hampering manufacturing in outlying territories and pressuring producers to concede price cuts to compete.
Plans are being completed for the annual Sunday evening park services in Hagerstown City Park during July and August by the Washington County Young People's Christian Federation. The opening service on July 4 at 6 15 will feature Reverend Dr. William S. Hess as guest speaker and the Presbyterian Church. Various church choirs will provide music and outstanding young workers in the community will participate. This is the third year the services have been held and they remain popular with residents of Hagerstown and Washington County.
Mrs. William T. Hamilton Jr chairs a National Antietam Commemoration Pageantry Advisory Committee crafting “On Wings of Time.” Miss Mary Cecelia Freeland outlines scenes from creation to Civil War, with over 1,000 cast in a wheel of progress finale.
A health teacher at Cauffman's Cut Rate Store in Hagerstown promotes the herbal medicine ANE claiming 75 percent of illnesses originate in the stomach and affect kidneys liver nerves and the whole body. He cites digestion as essential and urges readers to visit the store for a six day test and a free health booklet.
Secretary Woodring urged Congress to authorize a $36,122,000 immediate flood defense program for Ohio River cities most harmed by last winter’s floods. He framed it as emergency aid enabling broader planning of an $800,000,000 long term plan by army engineers, with many cities in Kentucky Indiana Ohio on the list. Major General Markham outlined 45 reservoirs in the basin costing $246,000,000 beyond existing authorizations.
Private Donald E. Younkins of the 16th Coast Artillery writes from Oahu Hawaii about life on the island. He describes Fort Kamehameha Schofield Barracks and Honolulu skyline noting 7700 soldiers stationed there and two weeks of maneuvers. He mentions Waikiki Wedding filming on the beach and urges young men from Washington and Frederick counties to see life in the Army on Oahu.
The rare General Douglas library is donated to the National Park Service and will be kept at the Antietam Battlefield library in Sharpsburg. Capt. John Beckenbaugh, nephew of the late General Douglas, presented the books, including autographs from Federal and Confederate leaders such as an autographed copy of Early’s Last Year of the War and Ulysses Grant’s Personal Memoirs inscribed by Grant’s daughter.
In Hollis Oklahoma a severe hailstorm swept 200 square miles, destroying about 600,000 bushels of wheat and heavy fruit crop damage. Harmon County Agent Clarence Burch estimated losses at 1.525 million dollars, with 1.25 million to crops, 250 thousand to buildings, and 25 thousand to wheat. Farmers seek Federal relief as fields lie buried six to eight feet deep in gullies.
Testimony began Monday before Judge Watson R. Davidson in a hearing to determine the fate of Ralph Hawk twenty who pleaded guilty to the torch murder of Mrs Hazel Gelwix and her daughter Helen fifteen. Hawk is charged with setting fire to the Gelwix bungalow New Year s Eve and causing the death of the mother and daughter who died in the fire. Catherine Gelwix twenty testified that Hawk and she planned to marry and that Hawk struck her with a flashlight the night of the fire. The court called the hearing to determine the degree of guilt. MEASLES EPIDEMIC An epidemic of measles is prevalent in the Keedysville section. Attendance among younger students at the Keedysville school was cut about one third yesterday but since the schools close next week the absence will have no effect on scholastic standings.
