Rev. H A Fesperman delivered the baccalaureate at Hagerstown High School citing John 16 12 and urging graduates to pursue knowledge through search and effort. He likened life to golf with progress won by struggle and warned that education takes eternity and always holds more to discover.
A speech on gradual revelation and learning emphasizes beginning at the start and waiting for God’s timing. It urges readiness for blessings, asks for larger minds, and notes two anthems by Cassel and a solo by Campana performed at graduation. Two hundred fifty graduates attended. commencement is set for Wednesday at the High School. Nearby notes of drought era business activity show slight expansion despite strike fears.
Quintuplets in Clorbeil Ontario show jaundice at one week old. Dr A R Dafoe, their physician, says the condition is not alarming and he prescribes treatment. The five sisters will not be exhibited at Chicago World Fair this summer due to safety concerns and travel risks.
Norman Bowles, disbarred Washington lawyer, found guilty of income tax evasion, was sentenced to three years in a federal penitentiary and fined $3,000 by Judge W. Calvin Chestnut in U S District Court after overruling Bowles’s motion for a new trial.
A United Airways passenger plane en route from Cleveland to Newark lost its way in dense fog and crashed in woods near Bethel Connecticut during a diverted landing. Twelve people including nine passengers, the pilot co-pilot and stewardess were treated for injuries.
Bowles faced an indictment alleging failure to file a 1930 income tax return, filing a false 1931 return, and seeking release on bail while planning an appeal. The passage also references guidance on obtaining material from a Classifed Section.
The St Johns College 1944 commencement began with a baccalaureate sermon by Dr. Edward Darlington Johnson at St Annes Church after graduates marched from campus. Sermons for 1944 graduates were also delivered in Boonsboro Williamsport Clearspring Smithsburg and Hancock. Diploma awards for Clearspring will be tonight with other town ceremonies later in the week.
Margaret Ann Angell, York's oldest resident, died Sunday after a brief illness. A 102 year old native of Adams County she formerly resided at Taneytown Maryland.
