Sixty-four University of Pennsylvania students, many in pajamas, were arrested as police quelled a rowbottom riot. Water fights blocked streets, milk bottles flew, hydrants flooded blocks, and fraternity windows and a hotel chandelier were damaged. Exams loomed as hearings began.
Three long term prisoners surrendered to Nashville prison authorities after a seven hour standoff in the east wing. The men were Carl Pentecost Lonnie Taylor and P Raines. Taylor had taken part in a prior prison break and received a lengthy sentence for the fatal shooting of a prison trusty.
STANFORD Kentucky June 5 A house painter later identified as Charles Ewing 44 was arrested here by Indiana officers who say he killed his wife and her father in Hancock County Indiana in 1927. He denied the charge and the officers said he had escaped from an Indiana state farm after bigamously marrying Zenith Burress.
In honor of George P. Bagby, late president of the Western Maryland Railway Company, trains and yard engines were halted for five minutes at 2 p.m. the hour of his funeral. Most lineal officials traveled to Baltimore the morning, and local offices run on a skeleton crew today.
Los Angeles dispatch reports the trial of R C Dowling, noted as Dapper Danny, for kidnaping his wife the actress aviatrix, may be postponed. District Attorney investigators say Mrs Dowling, formerly Marjorie Crawford Wellman, remains missing and unlocated before today’s trial call.
Concord New Hampshire June 5 Governor John G Winant signed the hard liquor law shortly after five this morning ending 17 years of state prohibition. The move makes New Hampshire the latest state to allow liquor sales after a lengthy ban.
Desperate drought in eight Western New York counties threatens up to 50 million dollars in crop losses. Erie county official warns hay and milk shortages likely, while parched states from Iowa to Utah report limited relief. Additional rains expected, but may be too late to revive damaged grain.
A garage on East Franklin Street was broken into with a cash register opened and some money stolen from the Poe garage rear of 15 East Franklin Street. An unsuccessful break in was attempted at the Troy Laundry garage nearby. Footprints and window tampering noted at Guy Spurrier’s home garden, but no entry.
Indianapolis June 5 The Republican state convention announced that Senator Arthur R. Robinson would be renominated with no opposition, guaranteeing renomination for the upcoming election. The move underscores Robinson's strong support within the party and absence of challengers.
Roy W. Long near Fabrles Mill pleaded guilty to a liquor violation in Federal Court last week. Judge Jaden Chestnut sentenced him to a $100 fine and six months in jail.
In Buffalo on June 5, Western New York recalls the 1869 Bushnell sextuplets born to Mr. and Mrs. James Bushnell in Chicago before moving to Buffalo. Four girls and two boys survived infancy few to none with lasting descendants. the mother died at 39, father 45.

Bloodhounds from Lexington Kentucky were brought in after daylight search failed to locate the desperadoes. Police scoff at Dillinger gang ties and report the trio fled seven miles west of Seymour after blocking a highway intersection with a stolen car and attempting to fill with gasoline without paying.
Peggy Hopkins Joyce sent an urgent cablegram to the sheriff promising to pay the butcher baker and dressmaker to save the French villa. Tradesmen claim furnishings were charged and officials threatened auction to cover merchant bills. She leaves New York for France June 9 and will meet all delinquent bills.
Larry Shattuck 13 believed to have lost all baby teeth but a physician produced a baby tooth from his ear as proof. The tooth is believed to have been in the ear for six or seven years.
A pullet owned by Emory Gonker of the Stanley Kline farm at Benevola is turning over production rapidly. Four months and three days old, the brown leghorn and Rhode Island Red cross weighs four pounds and has laid an egg each day for eight consecutive days and is still laying.
Gov. Albert C. Ritchie weighs a special session to cut Maryland relief costs. He orders Friday talks with state relief chief Harry Greenstein Baltimore Mayor Howard W. Jackson and budget director Walter Kinkman to trim the $18 million unemployment aid estimate for the coming year. Ritchie seeks to show how the state can raise funds without a special session while plans to consult citizens and relief officials to push the relief bill to the bare minimum.
In Santa Ana on June 5 7 year old Mary Ebarrquarry recovered in hospital after being rescued from a daytime chicken coop imprisonment. Her mother Jose Ebarrquarry faced justice court on charges of unjustified cruelty to a child as Mary played with a dozen dolls sent by readers of her plight.
Philadelphia report: Jack Smith confessed intent to jail rather than face a five thousand dollar bail after claiming involvement in a seventeen thousand dollar mail truck holdup in Conshohocken last week. He spoke with Police Sergeant Kelly before changing his mind.
James Lynn Norman Messner and Howard Whittington three local youths engaged a large groundhog yesterday near Shady Lawn. The animal was cornered beneath snow fence rolls along the National Highway and charged Lynn when released, tearing his shirt before he was dispatched with a club.
William Riehl, 68, in Oakland, Calif, reportedly winked and a .38 caliber bullet exited his right eye. Doctors reviewed his records and found a prior accidental bullet wound treated three years earlier. the projectile was not located at that time.
New York report: thirteen year old Meyer Geller dies after a head injury sustained during a fight. He refuses to name the assailant, saying he cannot tell on a big boy, insisting I am not a snitch. His mother recalls his words and concern.
Allen L Hollar 45 admitted slayer George Saum 22 and will be charged with murder with warrants to be prepared today State's Attorney said. Hollar remanded to jail for arraignment. Saum died at hospital after being shot Sunday night while locking his garage on South Potomac street. Hollar shown remorse at police headquarters. Saum funeral set for Wednesday at 4 pm at home 707 South Potomac with Rev A B Miller. interment Rose Hill cemetery. Survived by wife Fannie two daughters a son and father John L Saum plus brothers Lester Edward and Jack, all of this city.
Pittsburgh June 5 A self styled rank and file group head Earle J Forbeck of the Amalgamated Association of Iron Steel and Tin Workers announced plans for a march on Washington by steel workers discriminated for their union activities The march was set to begin tomorrow unless President Roosevelt signs the Waener bill or similar legislation prohibiting company unions Forbeck an insurgent faction leader warned that if a strike occurs the real strike will be in Washington not in steel centers.
Thieves ransacked the Day residence but ignored paintings silver and heirlooms valued in thousands. Treasures once belonging to Sir Francis Drake of Richmond were stolen including diamonds and silver pieces worth Fort Lauderdale area money. Mr and Mrs Pav say the burglars missed the best.
London reports Chancellor Neville Chamberlain announced Britain would pay nothing on the forthcoming war debt installment but would have paid a token June 15 if President Roosevelt could guarantee Britain would not be deemed a defaulter.
