An Italian correspondent reports Argentina under fascist pressure with army patrols occupying city areas, a confirmed wave of arrests, journalist crackdowns, and widespread exile or imprisonment. He notes all jails are crowded, May saw eight newspapers closed and seven editors arrested.
Treasury officials spotlight rocket projectiles to justify buying more bonds in the war loan. They say Navy reports rockets will be produced at over a billion dollars annually and can be fired by a single naval vessel at 26000 dollars per minute.

Chungking June 1 Chinese high command said Japanese troops push southward along the East China Sea coast in Chekiang to form a new anti invasion line. Enemy columns reached Yingfang in an 11 mile advance from Juiin while Pingyang lies 30 miles south of Wenchow port. Shanghai is 245 miles north and Foochow is 150 miles northeast of the liberated city.
In Washington officials released a note sent to France urging a review of policy toward the Levant and indicating American concern that France used force threats to secure concessions. The note followed a memorandum of protest approved in Washington. Paris reports De Gaulle could travel to Washington to discuss the crisis with President Truman.

Washington May 31 General H H Arnold announced the 8th Air Force will deploy B 29 Superfortresses to strike against Japan under Lt General James H Doolittle The move keeps Arnold overseeing the 20th Air Force while Doolittle leads the Tokyo raid veterans with over 3000 Flying Fortresses Liberators and fighters join three B 29 forces in theater already the 20th and 23rd Bomber Commands operate Superfortress units in the area

Almost a dozen 4 H club members in Washington county participate in the 1945 4 H Dairy Production Activity projects. Two Maryland winners from last summer were among nine. Rural youths are urged to help reach national milk goals of 1.72 billion pounds with fewer cows and less labor. Medals, war bonds, trips to the National 4 H Club Congress, and college scholarships are offered for top records. Official figures show E bond sales at the post office of $521,709 with $828,291 still to reach the $1,380,000 quota. Daily totals included $14,587.59 on the best day since April 9, and six day sales totaling $42,487.50, with May 28 at $2,212.50 and May 29 at $33,956.25. The chairman urged continued effort to meet both general and E series targets.
