The Elks Fourth of July dance at Hagerstown Country Club runs from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. with electric fans and cool ballrooms. The Lutheran Reunion at Pen Mar on Thursday July 20 features Rev. Ross H Stover as speaker from Messiah Lutheran Church Philadelphia The Friendly Church. An orchestra from Hanover Pa Lutheran churches performs at 1 30 pm with offertory postlude and congregation singing. A chorus from Hagers town Md will sing. The Silver loving cup awarded to the delegation with the largest attendance miles. The West Pennsylvania and Maryland Synods sponsor the event with a large committee listed including Rev B Clinton Ritz Rev H B Burkholder George W Hafer Milton Wert and others.
A pleasant evening was enjoyed last Friday by Queen Esther Chapter O E 8 members aboard Carl's pleasure boat on the Potomac river. Cards and dancing entertained guests. The chapter plans another party soon.
Broadfording June 30 report recalls a Sunday school social in Troupe's meadow on June 23 with many attendees listed by name. Milwaukee July 2 Bishop H Lester Smith of the Cincinnati Area Methodist Episcopal Church told the 59th annual convention of the Women's Christian Temperance Union that America can be kept dry. He warned prohibitionists aim to re create a holy war for righteousness in the name of God and humanity and urged a revival of moral religious preaching for a dry America.
In St Albans West Virginia two women Mrs L Oliver Gessel and Mrs Glenn Norvall were on a sand bar in Coal River when a canoe trip ended in tragedy. The husbands heard a scream and searched. both women were recovered but could not be revived. One woman reportedly sacrificed her life to help the other. Affects two small children left behind.
