Paris January 15 Allied forces storm approaching Houffalize threatening its fall as First and Third Armies link with the British Second Army to form a solid front. Hodges report six and a half miles to St Vith with gains along the northeast bulge and several towns captured overnight amid German reinforcements into the Saar and upper Alsace.
Calvert K. Hartle announces local March of Dimes drive with Judge Joseph D. Mish as county chairman and William Preston Lane Jr as honorary chairman. A street collection board and birthday cards will start soon. Campaign runs through Jan 31 with half locally retained and half sent to national HQ. A January 31 birthday ball at Franklin Court honors President Roosevelt, a polio victim.

High water forced the Davis family from their Mississippi river island home and they improvised quarters near Hughes Arkansas in a store. Fuel oil was tossed on a stove fire turning the building into an inferno. The mother Zelia May Davis 22 tried to rescue her husband Robert and their three small children but the father and children perished. Yesterday Mrs. Davis died in a Memphis hospital.
Cody W. Black of West Franklin Street collapsed several hours after his car collided with the vehicle of Preston L. Snyder on West Washington Street near Avalon Avenue. Black was removed to Washington County Hospital and diagnosed with concussion of the brain. Snyder escaped injury.
Columbia January 15. The perennial divorce bill reappears as Rep. John Long of Union introduces a joint resolution for a constitutional amendment. South Carolina remains the only state without divorce though a 1871 law allowed divorce for adultery and wilful abandonment before a 1895 constitutional ban.
Rev Donald Stonesifer pastor of Trinity Lutheran Smithsburg and Army chaplain is reported missing in action in Germany since December 16, the start of the German counter offensive. He previously served as assistant pastor at St John’s Lutheran in Hagerstown region before moving to Smithsburg two years ago. His wife and two children live in Hagerstown. Pfc Gordon A Moore son of Mrs Bessie Teach near Pinesburg has been missing in Germany since December 21 after graduating Williamsport High School class of 1937 and working at the Federal Silk Mill Williamsport before enlisting in July 1941. He has been overseas since October.
Fairchild Aircraft Division issued a call for 1000 additional workers to boost C 82 Packet production for the armed forces. Employment manager Paul R. Fitez said demand centers on sheet metal work with needs for skilled male and female workers. New hires with no prior experience will receive intensive training at trainee rate.
Rep Sabath voices sharp protest on postwar price rises and quality. He cites cigars once five cents now 15 cents or three for 55 cents and criticizes OPA for restaurant prices and portions. He urges lower ceilings on live cattle and vegetables, notes cream declines, and furniture costs soaring.
U S Sixth Army troops crossed the Agno river 88 miles from Manila and expanded the Lingayen Gulf beachhead to 45 miles. General MacArthur reports advances south from Lingayen Gulf toward Mangatarem and Catablan as Japanese resistance buckles along the Agno river sector.
Staff Sgt. Gerald R. Palmer of Smithsburg Rt. 2 received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters. Since June 19, 1944, with the 305th Bombardment Group, he has flown 32 daylight bombing missions over Europe as a ball turret gunner aboard B-17 Coke Hi. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Russell M Palmer and formerly worked at Fairchild's.
A Summit avenue resident told police a prowler has been active for several nights, seen in backyards peeping in windows. The man is described as tall and heavyset with curly hair and a leather jacket. A similar complaint came from Way side avenue last week.
A East End delegation petitioned for bus service, listing 395 names affecting about 1450 residents on Jefferson street Cleveland avenue and adjoining streets. Mayor Sweeney and two councilmen met Potomac Edison officers to review needs while noting buses and drivers are scarce and ODT permission is required. Officials pledged cooperation with Potomac Edison to secure service for residents.
Domei news agency hinted that Premier Koiso could be ousted amid military reversals. The broadcast noted factions pushing for bold political reform as Japan faces growing war pressure and a possible Diet crisis before January 21.
Police probe thefts including a Ford sedan from Market House lot and a coat taken from a confectionery store. An attempted break in at a grocery on Antietam and Mulberry succeeded in breaking one window but failed to enter. Calvin Repp near Clearspring reported the Ford theft and Robert Settles on South Cannon Avenue reported the coat theft. Dorothy Snyder reported thieves attempted to break into her grocery at Antietam and Mulberry.
Captain William H. Peters received a letter alleging a possible cigarette black market and planned an investigation. A soldier complained of being overcharged for a packet of cigarettes and urged action. Peters said plain clothes officers would conduct a check and noted no organized black market suspected, only occasional price boosts on scarce items.
Clara Cagle 30 a widow of Sergt Alfred Cagle saved two sisters and a nephew from a blazing apartment. She guided them to a window and boosted them to safety before returning to help herself. Her body was later found among the debris.
A former Manila Army-Navy Club watchman says Japanese officers are moving from large apartments and hotels. Civilians are restricted in the port area, Dewey Boulevard closed, and parts of the waterfront walled off to hide bomb damage. The informant noted claimed Japanese staged “dynamite practice” and observed American planes strafing Dewey Boulevard. He was allowed to leave Manila to buy wine in the north.
London reports Germans have expanded fake American and French broadcasts as part of a broader phony air program saga. A station imitating an official air feed aired fake news praising Montgomer y and detailing supposed heavy U S losses while a French program urged the Free French to avoid a repeat of 1940.
London dispatch reports Ilya Ehrenburg stating in Pravda that Russia will judge German war criminals in its own way. He emphasized Russia is not part of the Allied War Crimes Commission and that the nation remains preoccupied with Berlin, both awake and asleep.
Public invited to meet four Washington county enlisted soldiers returned from Germany by General Eisenhower. Franklin Court will broadcast their story over WJEJ from 7:45 to 8 PM. Doors open 7:30. Vets served in D-Day France Belgium North Africa and related campaigns.
Lt. Ensminger, 216 Hager street, is promoted to First Lieutenant in the Panama Mobile Force. Commissioned February 1945 after Medical Field Service School, he served as assistant battalion surgeon with a Puerto Rican infantry unit in the Antilles. Prior to the Army he was a draftsman and attended Newberry College.

Cpl Richard C Stockwell of Chillioth, Missouri, earned a second lieutenant’s bars in battle with the 2nd Armored Division near Belgium on Christmas Eve. Under heavy enemy attack, Stockwell helped lead a charge that turned back a German counterattack, with his unit recapturing 21 German vehicles and suffering 65 enemy dead. Despite losing his carbine, he and his men secured the victory and Stockwell was sworn in that evening as an officer.
London report says battles sweep 600 miles along eastern front from Budapest to Memel. Russians launch new offensives in Poland and East Prussia, opening the big winter battle between the Carpathians and Memel. Soviets strike from Pulawy and Warka, near Warsaw, and along the Vistula triangle, with actions toward Krakow and Silesia. Marshal Konev’s southern Poland offensive nears Germany’s frontier, while other Soviet moves await confirmation.
December expenditures by the Washington County Welfare Board totaled 29,258 serving 1,152 people. Old age aid covered 600 recipients totaling 14,342 with an average grant of 23.91. Foster care 35 children cost 701.42 with 190.50 from parents. In Fitchburg Massachusetts a sailor’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Lamore, died within two hours of each other. He had telephoned from San Francisco saying he would be home in about two weeks after returning from overseas. Mrs. Lamore died at home from a heart attack. Mr. Lamore died at Burbank hospital after an operation. They were both 52. The son, Pharmacists Mate 2c William J. Lamore Jr., had just called last Friday to share the good news.
Geraldine Marie Briggs through attorney C.K. Hartie filed a divorce suit against John Myron Briggs in court today. It is the 11th divorce filing this month.
Rep. James Francis O'Connor of Livingston Montana died in his sleep last night at his Roose veit Hotel residence in Washington. He served in Congress and had been a long time public figure. The article notes his death occurred January 15.
