Local Officer Kriechbaum Killed in Leyte Campaign
Mrs. Fred B. Kriechbaum of 927 Guilford avenue was officially notified by the War Department of the death of her son Captain Philip Evans Kriechbaum who was lost in action on Leyte Island Philippines. He was 24, born in Chambersburg, and later moved to Hagerstown. He received wings March 22 1943 and rose from second lieutenant to captain by last September. The chaplain said he bailed from his plane but the parachute failed to open. Burial was in Ormoc. He leaves his mother sisters Mrs H C Utterbeck and Mrs Ellsworth Brewer Cumberland Miss Lucy Ann at home and Master Sergeant Fred M Kriechbaum Fort Bliss Texas. He had been employed at Fairchild and was a member of St John’s Lutheran Church.

Staff Sgt. Robert C. Triesler Jr., 21, husband of Mrs. Robert C. Triesler Jr., 1135 Potomac Ave, son of Robert C. Triesler, 200 Mealey Pkwy, has been awarded the Air Medal. Maj. Gen. Howard C. Davidson of the Tenth Air Force in Burma announced the honor. He is a B-24 armorer-gunner with the Seventh Bombardment Group, in the India Burma theater, with 164 combat flying hours. A Hagerstown High School football and basketball star, he also attended American University in Washington.
