Breath Test Trial for 100 Drivers on Jericho Turnpike

Negro Is Granted Parole From Pen
Charles W. Jackson, a Black man convicted in Washington County Circuit Court in 1921 for killing a Black woman and sentenced to life, was paroled by Gov. Harry W. Nice after more than 18 years in custody. Judge Wagaman and former State’s Attorney Wolfinger supported the parole, deeming the murder nonpremeditated. Jerome Hayward also received a parole. Eight Skiers Die In Alpine Avalanches In France And Switzerland
Avalanches across the Alps crushed eight skiers to death during the weekend. Alpine troops, guides, and volunteers recovered five of seven buried near Valloire on the French Italian border. Another slide north of Davos in eastern Switzerland claimed five more skiers. An Englishman, Merton Stebbing, was killed. his companions survived.

Officer Dies In Plane Crash Near Trinchera Colo
An army plane crashed nine miles south of Trinchera Colorado on Sunday killing its pilot Lieut. Wallace A Nau who was alone. A rancher George Cardinal and his family found the wreckage four miles from their home as authorities faced a snow storm delaying retrieval. The aircraft had departed Denver for Amarillo Texas.

Five Ohio convicts escape guard armory raid in Omaha

Washington county deaths rise in motor vehicle report
The fourth annual report of the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles shows twenty six people killed in Washington county auto accidents in the year ending September 30 1938. Statewide deaths reached four hundred sixty six and 1104 residents were licensed to operate cars in Hagerstown with 1658 driving tests given.
