Navy reports an American battleship destroyed 22 Japanese planes in October sea battles near Santa Cruz and Guadalcanal. Capt. The Stars and Stripes reports General Hartle’s transfer to London HQ to replace Eisenhower. Rev. J. T. Bard of Clifton Avenue Methodist Church in Baltimore is commissioned as first lieutenant and heads to Chaplain School in Boston. Bard, a former Hagerstown resident, visited family at 31 Summer street and recalled delivering newspapers in his early days. Bard, 36, was educated at St. John’s College Annapolis and served multiple Baltimore Methodist churches. Bard’s wife Mary Potterfield hails from Hagerstown, daughter of Potterfields of Bryan Place. she was a former Hagerstown teacher. Mr and Mrs Russell J Shank of Clearspring report five sons in service. one, First Sergeant Donald M Shank, returned home for Christmas Eve with his wife. Hunter Shank is now serving abroad.
