Destroyer explodes and sinks off Sandy Hook New Jersey
A United States destroyer exploded and sank about six miles northeast of Sandy Hook New Jersey today. The cause was undetermined. Three Hurt In Early Accident At Death Curve Bridge
Three persons were injured in a snowbound morning crash at 2:30 near Death Curve bridge on Antietam Creek below Funkstown. Ella Lee Cockrell, 23, suffered a possible fractured collar bone. Mrs. Austin Miller, 34, sustained internal injuries. Austin Miller escaped harm. All are at Washington County Hospital. Cockrell said she and the Millers were returning from Frederick when the crash occurred as the cat appeared to enter the bridge. Snow had just begun to fall.

Fire destroys section of depot warehouse near Toledo
Fire destroyed a 300 foot square portion of a warehouse at the Harvester War Depot ten miles southwest of Toledo early today. Brunswick Flier is Awarded Air Medal
Tech. Set. Shannon W. Danres of Brunswick Maryland and Capt. Charles D. Hewes of Biloxi Mississippi were awarded the Air Medal by Lieut. Gen. George C. Kentey commander of Allied Airforces in the Southwest Pacific for sinking a 9000-foot freighter in Musche Harbor on September 27. Their bomber made a low level strike with a midweight bomb hitting the vessel squarely causing black smoke and debris to rise as the ship listed and sank. The bombing run was difficult and dangerous because the target sat near a second vessel attacked by another plane.

Tail Gunner Gish Is Killed
Staff Sgt. Leonard N. Gish formerly of Fairchild and resident of Smithsburg was killed in action on November 2 during a raid over Austria after being reported missing in action. He trained as an aerial gunner in Casper Wyoming in 1942 and went overseas soon after. He was 20 years old.

Falls From Auto Leave Man Badly Cut Near Potomac Club
Otho Adrian Toms, 37, of Smithsburg Route 2, was badly bruised and lacerated Saturday evening after losing balance and falling from an automobile en route from the Downs ville Pike to the Potomac Fish and Game Club. A Vlaterstown Dairy milk truck driven by Mark Cuutter aged 42 of West Washington street was struck at West Wilson boulevard crossing by a Pennsylvania railroad engine.
