A Pangborn Corporation Crosley delivery truck caught fire while parked in the Post Office driveway at about 9 20 this morning. The gas line ignited and the vehicle was considerably damaged before an extinguisher from the Pioneer Ice Company hall could be brought to the scene.
Herbert F Harbaugh posted a $500 bond this morning to secure his appearance in criminal court next week, where he faces an indictment for carnal knowledge.
Senate Democratic leader Senator Barkley said taxes may not be needed as Congress trimmed naval funding. In Columbus on February 17 the Ohio Democratic Central and Executive Committee declared the state’s delegation should back President Roosevelt for renomination. If Roosevelt withdrew, the delegation should favor Senator Vic Donahey as first choice and Charles Sawyer as second choice.

In New Martinsville West Virginia on February 17 Mrs Okey Long 16 pleaded she did not know the shotgun was loaded when she grabbed it in anger and killed her 27 year old husband Sheriff Frank Berger said the shooting happened at a snowhound farm home 23 miles away as Long sought medicine for a sick cow A coroner s jury ruled the death was caused by shotgun wounds in her hands The widow was jailed without charge pending Monday hearing Neighbors said years of marital trouble followed by her leaving him repeatedly during their marriage
Seven year old Frank Miller Jr. and his brother Bobbie visited a hardware store with their parents in Chicago. The boy found a pistol in a nail bin and fired it, killing his father instantly. The mother witnessed the accident as the family dealt with shock. The incident remains under local police investigation.
In Omaha Nebraska on February 17 1972 three year old Roger Palmquist can recite all state capitals and the U S capital. His mother Mrs Ferne Palmquist notes his ambition to someday serve as president.
Britain reports minimal casualties after a naval confrontation off a Norwegian fjord with Germany claiming heavier losses. Norway protests British raid neutrality while Berlin demands restitution for the Altmark incident and indemnities. The destroyers Cossack Intrepid Ivanhoe joined a fleet surge as the tanker Baldur was scuttled by its crew. The Altmark remained in Josing fjord, possibly aground or wedged in ice. The captain’s Berlin telegram suggests the ship did not stay under British control. The British naval task force is returning homeward tonight.
Actress Madge Evans and her husband Sidney Kingsley are snowbound on their 50 acre estate two miles from their town in northern Bergen county New Jersey. Five foot drifts block the road as Kingsley clears a half mile driveway with a shovel. They have two servants, enough food and fuel though running low, and expect to reach a car tomorrow or Monday.
