OPA controls shift to midnight as new meat price ceilings take effect next week. Administrator Paul Porter said he followed Secretary Anderson’s recommendation under the new price control law, stating there was no choice.
Shanghai reports the United States will sell most American civilian surplus property in the western Pacific and China to China. Payment would be in Chinese currency plus about 56 million dollars in value. The sale excludes aircraft, ammunition, weapons or non demilitarized combat material. Chinese communists criticized the plan as war material to fuel civil conflict.
President Truman loafed aboard the yacht Williamsburg near the end of his summer vacation en route to Hampton Roads Virginia. In Bermuda waters Secretary Charles G. Ross failed to deliver his regular radio report to reporters aboard the navy ship Weiss that accompanied the Williamsburg for eight days. The cruise ends in Washington around 5 pm Monday.

Mellor’s condition may delay the hearing for at least two months according to Deputy Sheriff Clever Reynolds.
Mantz Victor in Bendix Classic results remain unsettled as Jacqueline Cochran finishes second after an error in timing that could drop William F. Eddy to fourth. Thomas Mayson, flying a Mantz P-51, posted a 408.6 mph average amid scrutiny of third and fourth place times.
Police began a search for 21 year old Louella Riggs of 621 West Franklin street who quit work at a local plant and has not returned home since yesterday morning. Description notes she is 5 feet 4 inches, 105 pounds, brown hair, blue eyes, wearing a blue sweater blouse rose pleated skirt and high heeled shoes and said she had a date but gave no name.
Kansas City August 31 Mrs. William A. Babcock leaves for Korea to join her Army major husband. The trip starts with car trouble a fire near the station and a chaotic dash to catch the train. A drunken man slept in her berth until police removed him.
Langhorne Pa August 31 up to 115 entries were received for the 100 mile national championship race to be revived Sunday at Langhorne speedway after a wartime hiatus of four years. Time trials were held today with the 35 fastest qualifying for the main event.
A memorial column recalls Ronald Lee Thomas died Sept 1 1945 with lines from a grieving mother. Also notes George W Carroll killed Sept 2 1944 by his daughters and sons and Mary Jane Cromer Mullenix remembered after two years. Billy Martin of Burlington North Carolina was injured last night when his tractor trailer overturned pinning him under the cab. He was admitted to Washington County Hospital for arm and hand lacerations brush burns and observation for other injuries. Mrs Preston Cook suffered burns from hot coffee and was treated and released. Three-year-old Lewis McCaulley sustained a severed tendon and was treated at the hospital. Lee E Golden received knee lacerations and required stitches.
A Klan leader claims a presence in all Franklin County factories and shops while state police probe Klan activities in Pennsylvania. The inquiry centers on a Chambersburg advertisement signed Franklin County Klan declaring “we are here to stay.” Deputy Secretary Gene Smith notes the Franklin County Klan lacks a Pennsylvania corporation charter.
New Orleans August 31. Senator Theodore Bilbo 68 notes he will be operated on today for an inflammation of the mouth. He said he expects to be out of the hospital within five days and feels better than in 15 or 20 years.
