Blind Man's Bluff Anger at City Judge Over Clermont Infirmary
Belford Goodman a completely blind man was found wandering by Officer O Hara and brought to the police court. He said he had been an inmate at Clermont county infirmary but was sent to this city with no money or friend and had eaten nothing since yesterday. Judge Ermston provided money for food and the mayor ordered the venerable outcast placed in the city infirmary. Otis Dudley then sent a letter to the Commercial arguing the Clermont affair was misrepresented, stating Goodman was found in Batavia seeking admission to the Marine Hospital after injury and wage deductions. he was then sent to the infirmary and transported to Cincinnati, placing no further link to Clermont.

The Summerside Methodist church reopened Sunday the 15th with Rev. Spahr of Trinity church delivering a sermon on Psalms exxii 6. He spoke of the church as vital to life for Christians and unbelievers, praised retiring pastor Rev. R. S. Ruggles, and noted the $200 debt was immediately liquidated by the congregation, securing prosperity within the church walls.

Born near Boston in 1809 he rose from modest beginnings to hold many offices including commissioner, surveyor, magistrate and provost marshal. He led extensive enterprises enriching the county and earned a respected name. his passing draws wide sorrow and mourning.

Fire destroys Rumpke barn at Mt. Carmel
Fire at 3 o'clock Monday morning leveled the barn of August Rumpke at Mt. Carmel. One horse and one mule, a spring wagon, 19 tons of hay and grain, and other contents were burned. Estimated loss about $1,000, with $750 insured in the Ohio Farmers.

Death of Mrs Manorah Lowe noted in obituary line
The well known Mrs Manorah Lowe died at her North street home on Monday last September 28. Born in 1818 in Batavia, she was the eldest daughter of the late Judge O. T. Fishback and widow of Colonel Lowe of the 12th Ohio volunteers who died at Carni fex. She was praised for purity, kindness, Christian character, and devotion. The funeral sermon was at the Presbyterian church and the remains go to Xenia for interment beside her husband.

Col Carlton sent regrets for absence, while B F Moorehead of the 4th Wa Volunteer Confederate regiment sent a letter noting capture of a portion of the 89th at Chickamauga. Copperhead bite scares Olive Branch hunter near Batavia
A colored man, William Carroll, was bitten on the instep by a venomous copperhead in Olive Branch while squirrel hunting. He returned to Batavia for medical aid, with his foot and leg swollen and painful, and may endure yearly Septembers’ pain like a former victim, Uncle Joseph Kidd. The community hunts for the snake’s mate as doctors treat the bite with whiskey and ammonia.
