John B Martin promotes a Linwood to Bethel electric street car line along the Ohio Turnpike. Property owners along the route must raise funds to build the road bed while capitalists provide rolling stock and equipment. The plan envisions improved community growth and a booster for the region.
A bay team belonging to Rice Perkins bolted while its owner was away on an errand and reached the home of Joseph Staten. In turning a corner at Charles Robinson’s residence a tree separated the pair. the off-horse slipped, breaking a hind leg. Perkins was unhurt, but the carriage was wrecked and the humane officer called to euthanize the suffering animal.
Mr and Mrs William E Whitacre announce a reception for their son John Whitacre and his bride Josepha Happe. The couple are on a bridal trip and the reception will be Friday afternoon from 1 30 to 5 o clock. Mr Whitaker of Schenecteday NY works with Thompson Houston electricians and has many friends here and in his new home.
The Bantam fair suffered through extreme heat and dust, but Friday brought cool moist air and strong attendance. The fair still paid all premiums and expenses, leaving a small surplus despite weather challenges. The event remained a popular attraction, with rain arriving as a rare blessing.
Report notes the Toledo workers laying rails on a new railroad bridge at Batavia Ohio facing extreme heat. The week was clear hot and dry with a 104 degree high on the 10th and a 45 degree low on the 6th in Jackson county. No rain occurred countywide until the evening of the 16th and conditions harmed most crops. Early corn ripened and was harvested. late planting suffered. Pastures fair. clover yields decent for seeds. Cabbage harmed by worms. melons fine but scarce. grapes and plums moderate. apples small and short in supply. stock water scarce but improving.
A Catholic cemetery monument to Genlah Covalt was moved from Owensville to Hillsboro after purchase by its makers. The 17,000 pound stone, priced at 1200 dollars and sold for 250, will require six wagons for transport to Hillsboro with an estimated reshipment cost of 50 dollars. Remains were reburied at Spring Grove with other Covalt family members.
At the board meeting Monday R D Sapp was elected president as the board, including A W Giffilan and John Sutton, reorganized. Bills were approved and contracts let: R F Bush to top bridge in Batavia township at 2 dollars per hundred feet and C M Long to dig a county jail vault at 2.5 dollars per foot. Adjournment set for Tuesday September 28.
A handicap race at Amelia last Saturday afternoon drew a large crowd. John Lutes won first prize a bicycle lamp. Will Kirgan took second a cyclometer. George Cord earned third a cap. In the ladies race Mrs Resh of New Richmond won a bicycle lamp. Anna Hopkins placed second with a cake.
Dr J T Rieker has set up a telephonic line connecting his Mt Carmel office and home at Fruit Hill with stations at Tabasco and Cherry Grove allowing 24 hour call access. The line uses locust poles and cost 252 dollars to install with plans to link to a Cedar Point long distance system to improve public safety and quick assistance.
The record shows the present season has the earliest first killing frost among two seasons. Observers note frosts this year occurred before the 20th but were not considered killing.
A large turnout attended the soldiers reunion last Saturday. The program featured an invocation, several musical numbers, recitations, and readings including The Wounded Soldier and The Fight at Lookout. Comrades delivered remarks and a benediction closed the event.
A reunion of the wing-Crane families will be held at Bethel in Crane's grave Saturday September 25. All relatives and friends are invited. Don't forget the baskets.

George P. Chatterton of this place and T. P. Pierce of Bethel filled a board vacancy by electing W. O. Robinson. They then chose John Cronin as president and George Hatfield as secretary for the coming year. The meeting adjourned with satisfac tion noted at Batavia last Saturday.
Frank Stephenson suffered a broken head from a shattered beer glass and a cracked purse as he pleaded guilty to intoxication. The mayor fined him the costs and ordered work house detention until paid. George Werner, a blacksmith on the dump, also pleaded guilty to drunkenness and was granted time to raise costs. Officer Young made the arrests.
The Southern Ohio Eisteddford Association announces its annual musical and literary meeting in Jackson on October 14 with choirs from neighboring towns. Prizes total 1000 dollars, with 16 to 50 voices in numbers, solos, and contests for essays orations recitations and extemporaneous speaking.
Adams county crops boost claim of the finest tobacco in years while John B. Young of Jefferson anticipates strong returns after selling ten thousand pounds at one cent. Local items cover mail rules for service members, legal appeals, a funnel cloud sighting, and a variety of regional notices and opinions.
In Squire Hall's court at Monterey John Davidson was bound over to the grand jury in 220 for assault. James Crate was jailed in default of 800 after being caught in a Loveland Heights house breaking awaiting grand jury action. bh. J. Fagley named Deputy for Clermont county. An October 2 teachers examination will be held in Batavia to correct a circulating rumor.
The Georgetown band won the prize of $150 at the Manchester fair band contest judged by Herman Bellstedt. Contenders included Crargetown, Williamsburg, and North Liberty bands.
The Moscow band, praised as a top local organization, returned from Owensville last week and serenaded the town at moonlight. A lightning strike destroyed John Padgett's barn near Mio ville, burning hay, wheat, utensils and one horse. Padgett had just left moments earlier. The loss was not insured.
Cincinnati papers misidentified Chas A Brannock of Bethel as secretary. The actual secretary was W. E. Benningon of Bantam. Brannock is a steadfast county Republican and not connected with factions.
New Richmond youths secure Pittsburg’s Prof. Byron W. King for an October 4 opera hall entertainment. He impressed attendees at the last Institute, and the sister city’s eagerness signals strong interest. Further notice will follow. Addison Pownell, B&O baggage master at Loveland, died suddenly last Saturday from heart trouble beside a train. He served as baggage master, conductor, and station agent, and leaves a wife and three children. Marriage licenses issued this week include William Welton Wilson with Eva Perkins and several other couples. Also printed are practical game laws and hunting dates, with prohibitions on certain quail shipments and Sunday hunting rules.
