Mr D B Pierson spoke at the Cincinnati Horticultural Society meeting on August 25 about one hundred pear trees split equally between dwarf and standard varieties. They grew four to six feet this season after spring 1859 planting in drained clay soil with trenching and surface manuring. Seedling maples four years old rose eight to ten feet this season, reflecting stock size increases.

The tomatoes are repeated with syrup in cycles, then dried if weather permits or left in syrup until drying weather. Sun drying on earthen plates follows, about a week, then packing in wooden boxes with white sugar between layers. Keeps for years.
