A nephew from Neville Ohio writes in August 1860 about a sacred compact and fraternal bonds challenged by opposing claims. He asserts Northern freemen defend equal rights against Southern ambitions, warning against sale of a presumed heirloom called Juman Jesy and urging virtue and unity.
In 1805 I rode from Newtown to Bethel with a Kentuckian, passing through wooded, muddy roads near Witham's settlement. We saw thousands of wild hogs, some skinned and left to decay. Zachariah Chapman had just begun cabins on the state road seven miles west of Bethel.
The narrative describes hogs killed for meat and skins in riverbank camps, with pork salted and skins valued at about thirty three cents. It notes mast abundance before 1806, beech nut sprouting in 1805, and hickory and black walnut crops. 1806 proved dry with a severe winter, poor crops, worm damage, and a lean 1807 as many wild hogs died. survivors fed on weaker hogs.
Gen. S. F. Cary, once aligned with Fillmore and Bell, now supports Lincoln. In a Cincinnati speech he extols self-made leaders rising from poverty, citing Abraham Lincoln and other self-made figures like Tom Corwin, John C. McLean, Horace Greeley, and Henry Clay, framing elite achievement as earned through industry and perseverance.
A speaker defends labor as divinely ordained and attacks capital's ownership of workers while contrasting Republican aims with Southern rights. He argues against slaveholding, condemns exploiting labor, praises the Almighty as a builder not a capitalist, condemns extending slavery to new territories, and supports Abraham Lincoln to counter Northern stinginess toward freedmen and to uphold constitutional rights. The crowd reacts with applause as the speaker invokes Biblical imagery and political alignment.
The passage recalls a sharp split within the Democratic party at Charleston. Northern leaders resisted Southern demands to bind labor to capital and to claim territories with property rights. The North sought a consistent platform and rejected regional duplicity, prompting laughter as factions debated.
The East Fork Little Miami Baptist Association closed its session at New Richmond on Aug. 30 with sermons by Rev. W I Dolly Rev. Scott Dr Colver Rev J Lyon and Rev B Y Siegfried. One hundred seventy additions by baptism were reported. The M E and Presbyterian churches offered their buildings for sessions. Next meeting set for Cheviot in Hamilton county the Friday before the first Sunday in September. A Sunday School Convention preceded the association.
