Cassie Woodlief wife of John R Woodlief dies at home after a long illness in Batavia Ohio She was a prominent local figure active in church and charitable work and leaves a husband a daughter a grandson and two great grandchildren The obituary recalls her pioneer family roots and lifelong devotion to home and community
Local businessman Tom Keen of Geo A Keen & Bro explains how he built a 14 by 12 foot cistern atop a hill to harvest watershed. Water is piped to his yard and house, delivering 9 psi pressure and cold pure water for sprinkling bathing and domestic use. Keen notes others could replicate the plan.
Rebekah lodge members in Batavia gather Thursday for regular session with an anniversary program and lunch. Friday hosts a district convention at the I O O F hall with a training school, basket dinner, and grand officers present led by Miss Elizabeth Marsh.

Batavia high school, coached by Prof Aultman, traveled to Bethel for a contest. Bethel led 9 to 6 after a strong scoring surge, Batavia had 8 to 0 through six innings and added three more in the ninth. Both teams conducted themselves well. Next Friday Bethel visits Batavia. several key players were absent.
Thomas Duckwall received multiple pets on his birthday from family members and friends. The boy grew amused then overwhelmed by kittens and a tom cat, culminating in a playful but serious “war” against cats as friends teased him.
Clermont county tomato canneries employ a large force to handle thousands of bushels daily. Tomatoes are hauled to plants where hand peeling starts, then machinery finishes the process until boxed for shipment. Many town residents earn wages, boosting trade from farmer to merchant and banker.
Well attended program featured 31 numbers across two hours with music and elocution. Pupils wore Sunday dress and performed capably, showcasing town and vicinity talent. The Bata vatans take pride in their handsome auditorium and the event drew a good crowd.
In Highland county near Greenfield two farms owned by Mr. Dunlap cover 536 acres. One holds a pony herd of 275 with 107 brood mares. The White Dairy Farm spans 225 acres with 107 milk cows, 80 Jerseys heifers, two large barns, four silos, and a dairy barn. Daily milk sales reach 230 gallons. It takes 20 workers to manage the operation and both farms are sound investments.
The Rev. Geo M Fulton officiated at the September 11 ceremony joining Louis Marchand Stahl and Ida Homes Moon at the Homes residence near Morrow. Mrs. Stahl is Miss Homes’ sister. Stahl, a Pittsburg business man with twenty years at Westinghouse. Guests from Pittsburg and Cincinnati attended. a six o'clock dinner for over fifty followed. The couple will reside in Limestone Florida after November first.
George Hanen of Amelia suffered a severe leg break last Thursday when a horse, noted as vicious, kicked him while hitching to a wagon. The man, formerly a Covington foundry foreman, faces six months out of work. The horse’s poor reputation makes it costly property, though it might fetch 15 cents.
George Maulden, a colored resident, died last Wednesday after several weeks of illness. He was 55 years old and had been able to care for himself until recently. Burial Sunday at 2 p.m. from Charles Jackson’s residence, with the colored Masonic lodge in charge. Interment in Union Cemetery.
Mrs Elsie Carter Gillman wife of Orville Gillman died last Saturday at 4 am after tuberculosis at her home on the Davis pike She was 21 years old daughter of Mr and Mrs Ben Carter and leaves a husband and a four month old child Funeral Monday from the residence with Rev E Burdsall officiating burial in Union cemetery She was a favorite among her young friends.
Harley B Kell of Dayton wed Annie K Pitzer of Bethel on September 14 1912 at Batavia parsonage in a simple ceremony conducted by Rev Burdeall. Guests included O R Segendollar Maud Pitzer and Mrs Burdnall. The couple to reside in East Dayton after a two week honeymoon.
