Pioneer Monroe Resident Benjamin Simmons Dies at 77
Benjamin Simmons of Laurel died at his Laurel home on September 2, 1896, aged 77. Reared in Laurel he lived a useful community life. Last of the Simmons line, his brother Leonard and sister Mrs Ellen Hitch also died in September 1894 and 1895. A farmer and lifelong Republican, he was held in high esteem. Remains interred in Carmel cemetery.

Accident at Bantam fair injures man with limited sight
T M Willis, hearing impaired, was knocked down by a large horse in the Bantam fair small ring. He opened a gate to reach the grand stand and stepped onto the track as the horse, driven by stockman Mr McBeth, approached. The impact knocked him down and the light rig wheels passed over him. He is recovering and expected to heal.

A Bantam Wednesday afternoon game between county north and south sides for $20 ended with the Southerners defeating the North by 4 to 2. Comrades of the 89th plan their Camp Dennison reunion on September 19, marking Chickamauga’s 83d anniversary, inviting soldiers to attend. In Georgetown last week an old building’s destruction uncovered silver coins of various denominations hidden among timbers, packed into a peck measure borrowed from a nearby grocery, believed stowed since early in the century.

Clive Hulik Appointed Naval Cadet Passes Entrance Tests
Friends report Clive Hulik has been admitted as a naval cadet at Annapolis after passing the mental examination. He also reportedly cleared the physical test and is now enrolled. The class had 84 members with 16 passing. Memorial services will be held at the Presbyterian church next Sunday with sermons at 10:30 and 7:30.
