Clermont County Commissioners meet at Batavia Court House to discuss four levies including a proposed two mill library and relief levy to fund dependent children and poor relief. Alongside, resolutions seek one mill bridges and roads levies for 1950 1951 resurfacing and repair of bridges and county roads.
Mrs Betty Jordan of near Marathon starts her teaching career as a Batavia kindergarten teacher marking the community’s first year of kindergarten. She was born in Denver twenty years ago and credits her parents for early education shaping. Local families will share the new program with her as Donald Jordan joins the Williamsburg high school faculty. National Newspaper Week is noted for highlighting the role of newspapers in daily life.
Cincinnati Police arrested Hill and Harris as they entered a pawn shop to pawn a $300 accordion. The pair were moved to Batavia after county officials were alerted. Harris denied involvement and said he was only helping Hill. Most stolen items were recovered with aid from local and Cincinnati police.
Batavia attendees Valetta Costigan Phillip R Church and Claude Tarvin joined Amelia delegates Betty Morgan Lois Irene Mutschler and Nori Simonsen at the Congregational Christian Youth Conference held last week at Wittenberg College Springfield Ohio. They took part in classes workshops and lectures on Christian living worship and doctrine as Ohio Conference churches concluded Sunday.
Clermont County high school baseball begins Friday September 16 with eight schools in a seven game schedule. Trophies honor champions and runners up who advance to the Southwestern tournament in Cincinnati next spring. Queens City umpires officiate. First two games listed by date and matchups for each school, plus an 8th grade series and a fall schedule.
The new flag bought for Clermont County Home was dedicated Sunday September 4 at 2 pm. Frank W. Weaver Post 237 Americain Legion Batavia led the ceremonies. Cumminsville Veterans Drum Corps Cincinnati provided music. Rev. Fred M. Marks Batavia Methodist Church delivered the principal talk. he served as World War II South Pacific chaplain.
A Clermont County jury ruled in favor of the Village of Bethel after a three hour deliberation in a $1000 damage suit filed by Thelma and Charles Bryant. The Bryants claimed waterworks failed to shut off water during their vacation causing flooding and damage to floors and furniture. Bethel was represented by Forest Ely and Judge Charles White.
The Clermont County conservation committee invites youths under 18 to a Friday meeting at 8 p m in the clubhouse near Batavia. Talks by Blaine Moore Howard Spaulding H T Whitt and Edgar Anstaett will cover wildlife and conservation. Films by Bert Carroll accompany the program. Scouts and other youth groups are welcome with an adult attendee.
A Monterey man sustained injuries in an automobile collision. The incident occurred recently as he was involved in a crash on a local road. He received medical attention and is listed in stable condition.
John B Ireton died August 30 in Christ Hospital Cincinnati aged 53. He founded the Cincinnati meat packing firm bearing his name in 1923 and served as its president until its sale fifteen years ago. At death he worked for Gus Juengling & Son Inc. He held several fraternal posts including Marathon Lodge F and A M Linden Chapter CBS Marathon and the Cincinnati Shrine.
A summer class of 1800 graduates from Ohio State University with Dr. Wilbur W. White delivering the commencement address. Included in the Felicity group is Lowell A. Gregg of Felicity, earning a bachelor of science in education.
Batavia Grange will sponsor an orange chif fon cake baking contest on Thursday September 15 at 8 p m. The Home Economics committee of Batavia Grange will organize the event and provide the recipe.
William F. Winter of Batavia has been promoted to Major in the United States Air Force. He is stationed at Grenier Air Force Base Manchester New Hampshire and serves as custodian of the Central Non-Appropriated Welfare Fund and assistant purchasing and contracting officer. He received his commission in April 1943 and served at Orlando and Wiesbaden before returning from occupation duty in Germany in 1946. The Winters have two children Joyce K and Michael and his parents Mr. and Mrs C F Winter plan a visit to Manchester.
Russell Thirey of Monterey, superintendent of Williamsburg schools, is hospitalized with a brain concussion after his car collided with a vehicle driven by Frank Glass on Route 1 near Dallasburg. Police and highway patrol report about $1,000 in damage. Thirey treated at Loveland doctor F H Lever before transport to Our Lady of Mercy Hospital.
Miss Frances Reece, county welfare worker, departs Boone County Airport with a two and a half year old ward. They travel to Boston Massachusetts to place the child at the Boston Nursery for Blind Babies until eligible for the Ohio School for the Blind. Transportation and care funded by Clermont County Cancer.
At Batavia Church of Christ on Saturday afternoon September 3 Miss Lillian Moore daughter of Mr and Mrs Fred Moore of Batavia married Lewellyn Gray Picklesimer of Paintsville Kentucky in a double ring ceremony officiated by Rev Gerald Durre. Attendants were Elanor Panther Roma Allen with Ralph Simmington as best man. A reception followed at the Moore home and the couple will reside in Lexington Kentucky where he will teach near the university.
Miss Margaret Shumate of Amelia Rural Route 2 received the cap at nursing school capping services marking six months completed in the Preclinical class. She entered the program in March with thirteen classmates and is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Price Shumate.
Russell G. England, Farmers' Home Administration Supervisor, reports strong farmer interest in the new Housing Act signed July 15. Applications are not yet being accepted as funds must be allocated by Congress. Eligible borrowers must own the farm and lack credit locally. tenants cannot obtain loans. Most loans cover remodeling or construction of farm buildings with no specified cap, expected average around $2200. Repayment up to 35 years at 4 percent interest.
