Voters to decide on Batavia School bond for new high building

Batavia voters will decide on a school house bond issue next Saturday September 4 to fund a modern fireproof high school with complete equipment. The plan shifts emphasis from the old building to a new high school and special training facilities to handle population growth and keep the district in first-grade standing.

Batavia Lodge No. 1861 of the Odd Fellows will confer the second and third degrees on a class of candidates from Mt. Carmel Lodge. The ceremony is Friday evening September 8 with degree staff to gather at 7 oclock led by Capt. Albert Heinrici.

Mrs Adeline Brothers of Maywood visited relatives for a quiet 78th birthday last Sunday with most children present and eight great grandchildren. A fine dinner followed the gathering.

At the county board of education meeting, BE Pattison of Moscow was chosen to replace 8 Bagby of Folleity on the county school examiners. Pattison, superintendent of the southern district, is described as an able man for the post.

Institute Over Teachers Return Home Winter Work Meet

At New Richmond on Wednesday morning the Institute opened with singing and devotionals led by Rev. I C Lucas. Mrs Richards discussed education trends including free nurse and doctor services for children and revised discipline emphasizing intelligent obedience and classroom emergencies. The program featured Mr Mead on arithmetic and demonstrations of resuscitation. Friday's events included a school dedication parade and dedicatory address by Hon S D Fess, with Dixie Jubilee Singers performing.

Preparations Complete for Williamsburg Chautauqua Opening

The Williamsburg Chautauqua opens Thursday with a five day program under a large school grounds tent. Season tickets have sold well and attendees look for a strong lineup including concerts lectures and sacred music led by notable performers and speakers. Adults pay 1.50 and children 1 for season access.

Maham Family Fifth Annual Reunion Near Lebanon

The Maham family Reunion gathered at Mahlon and Mrs. Maham’s home east of Lebanon on Sunday August 20, with over 100 attendees. The event featured a bountiful feast, a program of talks and songs, and attendees from Batavia township and Cincinnati. The 1916 reunion will be at the Madams in Linwood with a slogan inviting guests to bring someone.

Hessian fly impact in Kansas and Ohio inquiry

In Paola Kansas August 16 1915 a letter to the Ohio Agricultural Experiment Station Wooster discusses Hessian fly outbreaks. A farmer reports sowing dates October 7 and November 4 on 13 and 7 acres and notes losses on a neighbor’s field sown Sept 24. The township saved about 50000 dollars by delaying sowing to after the fly date in 1914.

Tragedy as Child Killed by Threshing Machine Near Edenton

Last Wednesday near Edenton the five year old son of Roll Layman was crushed by the tongue of George Whitaker's threshing outfit as he sat on it while it passed by the Layman home. He died almost instantly. no blame is attributed to the machine owner.

Postal insured values increase under new regulations

New postal rule effective today raises parcel insurance to 100 dollars, up from 50. Insurance fees apply by value: 25 cents for 50 to 100, 26 cents for 25 to 50, 5 cents for 6 to 25, and 8 cents for parcels up to 5.
