Cemetery Reclaims WWI Cannon Loaned For Scrap Drive

The Batavia Union Cemetery again owns a WWI era cannon donated by the U.S. Army from Fort Ord California. State Rep William Massey and Gregg arranged shipping with a crating bill near 300 dollars paid by the Sesquicentennial Committee. Clermont County post offices will be closed Monday October 25 in observance of Veterans Day. No regular mail service will run that day except for perishable items and Special Delivery.

Appeals Court Upholds Land Price for I-275 Interchange

The First Ohio Court of Appeals upheld a $107,737 award to Omni Development Co for land taken for the I-275 SR 32 interchange. The state claimed $36,000 value while the owner argued up to $136,890. The court rejected errors about testimony on land sales and bias, finding no substantiating misconduct in the record.

Funeral Services Held For Goebel Barnett Council Candidate

Funeral services for Goebel Red Barnett 55 Milford Council candidate who died last week of an apparent heart attack were held at Craver Hookam Funeral Home. Burial followed at Graceland Memorial Gardens. He resided at 966 Helen Street Milford and is survived by wife Irma two daughters Sherry and Tammy at home two sons Michael Sacramento California and Lowell Ray Florence Kentucky and one granddaughter Kelli Barnett.

CNE School Board Seeks Levy Renewal Clarity

Clermont Northeastern Board of Education discussed a 2.4 mill levy renewal set for Nov 2, stressing it is a renewal, not a new levy. Batavia Teachers Back One Day Work Protest

The Batavia Professional Education Association voted October 13 to back a one day work halt to protest inadequate education funding. The action supports the Ohio Education Association convention in Columbus that authorized its executive committee to call a statewide teacher strike unless a tax package is approved. The protest targets the state legislature, not schools or families, and no date is set.

Howard Found Guilty Of Possessing Drug

Howard who was arrested on August 10 was charged with possessing and cultivating the drug. Possessing is a misdemeanor and cultivating a felony. The trial was set for December 7 with a six month jail sentence and a 200 dollar fine suspended except three days and 50 dollars during a one year probation. A stay of execution was granted pending appeal.

Officials OK Afton Plant Bond Issue

Clermont County Commissioners approved $700000 in revenue bonds after CIC recommendation for a Sofco Cincinnati plant at Afton. The 66000 square foot facility on 21 acres along SR 32 will be sublet to Ohio Fabricators Inc and employ 40 to 50 people. Bonds retired over 12 years with no taxpayer cost.

Jackson Two Protest Group Fights Abner Road Landfill

More than 300 signatures supported a petition opposing a landfill on a 200 acre Abner Road tract between SR 133 and US 50, four miles north of the Appalachian Highway. No formal proposal has been filed with county officials yet. Attorney Robert Sachs of Cincinnati will represent the protesters with Wes Widmer as chairman. trustees Ernest Straub Charles Wiederhold and Frank Parker back the opposition.

Batavia Bridge Opens After Long Delays and Bottlenecks

The Batavia bridge over the East Fork of the Little Miami opened to four lane traffic with no ceremony. Completion ran into delays due to weakened understructure and crumbling end walls, with final touches like striping and railing polishing to follow next year. Traffic patterns had been disrupted since April 22 as roadwork on SR 32 SR 132 and SR 222 caused bottlenecks and detours.

PTA Council Seeks Bids On School For Retarded

Clermont County PTA Council will meet Monday October 25 at 8 p m in the C G and E auditorium. Mrs William Charles president will lead the session with three speakers addressing drug abuse problems facing schools communities and homes. Dr Steven Katkin psychologist will speak along with an agent from the Narcotics and Dangerous Drugs Bureau and a Clermont Care Center representative outlining other facets of the issue.

Coupon donations aim for second kidney machine in Clermont effort

Local chairman Mrs. Mary Lou Parrott leads a savings drive to fund a second hemodialysis machine at Good Samaritan Hospital. A total of 791 000 General Mills coupon points have been collected toward reaching 600 000 per machine, with closes in December. Coupons may be sent to the hospital or Ruth Barry, project chair.

Clermont County to open new school for mentally retarded children

The Clermont County PTA Council sets a November 16 bid time for a new school for mentally retarded children. The project, funded by a bond approved in 1969, has grown to 1,580,000 dollars with 14 classrooms for 180 pupils. It sits on 20 acres at Benton road and U S 50, donated anonymously by a local family.
